Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul

The creators of the Chicken Soup books have returned once again to bring readers stories from those closest to one of America’s most popular television shows, American Idol. Whether vocal coach, director, contestant or fan, each has a story to tell—one that will inspire and touch your heart. It doesn’t matter if you’re a rabid fan or a part-time viewer, these stories will have you laughing, crying and believing in the American Dream.

This is not the first time I’ve read a book from the ever-popular Chicken Soup franchise, so I had a good idea what to expect: inspirational stories from people who’ve rallied with family and friends to overcome obstacles and celebrate successes in various areas of their lives. Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul does not disappoint.

I read a story about a woman who never used to be a fan of the television show, until one evening, while sitting down with friends to watch an episode, she realized the show wasn’t only about reality TV—but also about realizing American hopes and dreams.

I laughed out loud as I read an exchange between a married couple that sounded suspiciously like a Randy Jackson monologue, complete with his own brand of slang.

A finalist shared an experience about a typically cutting remark by one of the judges, Simon Cowell and her courageous response that humbled the judge, actually eliciting an apology. Other stories from finalists will have you crying as they relate experiences of how they touched the lives of people in ways they never imagined. You, too, will recognize that these contestants don’t just walk away with recording contracts and fame, but often are just as deeply affected as the fans they meet.

Perhaps one of my favorite stories, however, was from the Executive Producer of American Idol, Nigel Lythgoe. He gives the sage advice that if you have the talent, then don’t set your sights at levels you might consider realistic. Instead he says that we should “dream in the biggest scale possible.” For a series that started out small and is now one of the most talked about shows on television, helping young singers realize their own dreams, I’d say Mr. Lythgoe has far surpassed even his own. Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul is one book I heartily recommend if you’re looking for a few hours of laughter, tears and motivation.
