Cat in the Mist
Karma Santiago was the live in nurse for a strange old man who died suddenly. The problem is, Karma doesn’t think he died a natural death, she believes he was murdered. Blake Alexander is Henry’s grandson and hasn’t seen him for years but he also thinks Henry’s death wasn’t natural. Blake’s “people” want Blake to kill Karma in case she knows too much about his grandfather’s life and friends but Blake refuses to do that without cause. Strangely enough, Karma trusts Blake and the two of them decide to try to figure out why Henry died. But Karma and Blake have one major obstacle, they are fiercely attracted to one another and the attraction could get them both killed. Will Karma and Blake be able to figure out what happened to Henry before one or both of them are killed also?
Cat in the Mist by Sonja Foust is a cute but very short story. Things have to happen almost instantly to get through the story with the length it is. There isn’t time for a normal relationship to develop between Karma and Blake so they have to jump right in feet first within the first few pages. They quickly let their lusts get out of hand and have sex which in turn changes their relationship, now they want to save and help each other. The reader either likes the main characters in the beginning or they don’t, there isn’t much time to ease into it. I liked Karma and Blake, so I thought the story was cute. I would have liked for there to have been a little bit more “meat” in the tale to allow them to find clues and work through what is going on. It is just a little too abrupt to suit me. On the other hand, if you just want a really short story to tide you over then this one is cute.
