That Which Survives

Dr. Senna Laserian survived a horrific attack that killed her parents when she was a teenager and for two years she was missing and has no memories of that time frame. Now she is a university physics instructor, dating a police detective, Ryan Dalton, and life seems to be fine. Then people she thought she could trust start betraying her trust. Her boyfriend may not be exclusive, his police partner, Paige, is being really hateful and attacking Senna publicly and Ryan keeps excusing her behavior. Senna’s best friend has shared something personal that was no one else’s business. Senna has also recently met another man who stirs her blood and causes physical reactions she has never felt before, but is Konnor Chase who he seems he is? Suddenly people who once were friends of her parents are being murdered and someone seems to be after Senna too. She has no idea who to trust and begins to suspect that the memories she is missing are key to what is happening. She has tried all kinds of therapies for years trying to recover the missing memories and nothing has worked. Can Senna find the key to unlock her memories so maybe she can figure out what is going on or does she really want to find out what she may know?

That Which Survives by Ciana Stone is a great psychological thriller with a twist of science fiction and a splash of romance. Somebody has used technology that should be impossible to block sections of Senna’s memory and what she can’t remember may be a threat to the entire world. Ms. Stone doesn’t just make the unlocking of Senna’s memory as easy as going to a doctor and doing something like hypnosis – oh no, Senna must find key phrases or triggers to release the blocks in her mind. Although Senna’s character is strong, capable, independent, Ms. Stone has put her in an extremely stressful situation and knocked all her safe guards out from under her. Senna has no idea what is going on and who to trust. At one time or another, all the secondary characters seem to be the bad guys. This story is great! In the beginning I had a little trouble with the number of characters all being introduced into the story but hang in there, Ms. Stone moves quickly into the meat of the story and all the characters and sub-plots going on begin to make sense. I would love to read a follow up story to this one so I hope Ms. Stone has a sequel planned!
