The Killer Among Them

Katarina “Kat” Ramon is a tough and highly successful defense lawyer in New York but her roots are in a small Alabama town and so is the mystery of who killed her parents when she was a teenager. Cole Collins is the new chief of police in small Alabama town that Kat grew up in. Kat has a psychic gift that periodically shows her things that have happened or are going to happen. For years Kat has been dreaming of her parents’ murder but the dreams never have enough information to find the killer. Now another couple, friends of her parents, is murdered and Kat feels like there is a connection. Cole is open to any help he can get to solve the crime. It doesn’t hurt that Kat is an extremely beautiful, sexy and intelligent woman. Kat and Cole are drawn to each other but their lives are in different parts of the country and Cole has his own problems too. Cole has a nasty, vindictive, ex-wife who is addicted to drugs and alcohol and will do just about anything to get more money from Cole including threatening to take his daughter away. Can Cole and Kat solve the murders before more people are killed? And if they allow themselves to become involved with one another how can it possibly end well?

The Killer Among Them by Anita Whiting is a very well done romantic suspense with a paranormal twist. I loved the characters of Kat and Cole from the beginning. Both are strong, intelligent, moral characters that face difficult challenges with caring and dignity. These are the kind of people you would love to know in real life. There are several secondary characters in this book that are entertaining also along with aspects of what it’s like to live in a small town. Some of these characters add fun and humor too; I really enjoyed the humor introduced by Cole’s daughter Olivia and her best buddy Tiffany. Ms. Whiting keeps the story moving along quickly and the suspense builds all the way to the end. I had a guess or two about who the murderer was but I didn’t figure out until almost the end of the story who it really was. This story is probably a stand alone but I would love to see another story set in this small Alabama town with some of the secondary characters as the focus or even another crime to be solved by Kat and Cole! This is the only book I have read by Ms. Whiting but I look forward to reading more.
