Ordinary Me

I can’t help but say that Ordinary Me by June Sproat is so good that it reminds me of reading Judy Blume’s books when I was younger. There is the same kind of insight into teenage angst in both author’s stories. I recognized Kate and Jodi’s feelings of ordinariness. I think anyone who has survived being a teenager will see a little bit of themselves on the pages of this book! Kate and Steve are thrown together by a teacher who decides Kate needs a tutor. Steve is his chosen candidate. Jodi, Kate’s best friend, is sure that jocks are stupid but Steve proves her wrong.

Everything about this book is fun and interesting. I thought the first person style was perfect for telling this story because it gave the reader a chance to see inside Kate’s head. We got to listen to her thoughts, so many of which made me giggle because I remember having similar thoughts not too long ago! This is a great story for teens because it shows that differences are sometimes more imagined than real and that others may not be as far removed as you think they are. Social circles have edges that can become blurred and crossed, as Kate and Steve show us. June Sproat’s Ordinary Me is dynamite. A real confidence booster, it is very interesting.
