After Anna
Will is in deep grief over the tragic death of his girlfriend. To make matters worse, her death brought her secret life into the light and Will has to deal with the added guilt and hurt that this brings. The only thing keeping him going is the strength and support of his partner and best friend, Tyler. Tyler is there for him through thick and thin, not only because of their friendship but because he loves Will, and not just as a friend but as a lover. But that’s not the only secret that Tyler has been keeping—he knows more about Anna’s death than he’s telling and it could tear their friendship apart.
I really wanted to love this story, I truly did. It had all the elements of a great story but at times it felt strained. The writing was beautiful yet sometimes so esoteric that the meaning was lost behind the words. The relationship between Will and Tyler is extremely complicated, Tyler knows something that will ruin his friendship with Will and the guilt of this knowledge is eating him up inside. This is not a happily ever after story and it doesn’t even try to pretend that it’s going to be. This is an unhealthy relationship from the start. Tyler has an unrequited love interest in Will, Will is distraught over the death of his girlfriend and extremely vulnerable, and his girlfriend had issues all of her own. Theda Black did an excellent job of showing how love can blind one to the faults of that loved one, and Tyler and Will were definitely blind. She did an excellent job of portraying a man that is barely hanging onto the edge of sanity and how such profound grief can affect everyone around the person and suck them in to the downward spiral.
