When Nona Conrad took her sister and started a new life in a small rural area, she thought that life would simplify. With her half-brother’s nefarious business practices haunting their new lives, Nona and her sister try to keep their lives together. In strolls Simon Wright, the new owner of the camp that has become their refuge. Now that a strange new duo has cropped up in the woods around their home and in the nearest town, life has become very dangerous.

Can Simon convince Nona that she can trust him without giving her all the information that she is insisting on? Why is it that he’s demanding she trust him without knowing what his intentions are?

I had heard so many good things about Dorothy Garlock and know that she has been a bestseller for years; that being said I do not think that Ms. Garlock is an author that is to my personal taste. Her characters were unlikable and unrealistic in this book and I truly did not understand why they did the things they did. Simon was a pompous man who expected Nona to lie down and let him walk all over her. Nona was extremely ambivalent and seemed to change her mind repeatedly. She was very strong and then would give in on something that made no sense. I had wished that the characters could’ve been more realistic and made more sense as the plot was a great idea, but fell very short of realizing its full potential. I can say that I didn’t see the villain until they were revealed; there were a number of twists and turns in the plot that kept the story going well.
If you enjoy the feel of a historical novel in a contemporary setting I would suggest reading On Tall Pine Lake.
