Hero

Hero by Jessica Freely is a homoerotic short story.

David feels like his life is in a rut. Nothing interesting ever happens and the only companions he has are the books that he reads. His job at the book store is ok, but there is no adventure or excitement in his life. David soon remembers that you have to be careful what you wish for because it might just come true. David leaves work and sees a homeless man that he gave a meal to once, but today he has almost nothing in his wallet until payday. When walking home, David is accosted by three men bent on stealing his money, but when they find out he is broke they decide to take it in kind until someone comes to David’s rescue. Who saves David and will his other wish for excitement still come true?

Ms. Freely has created a fast paced story with good character development within a very short story. David is a mixture of contrary emotions, wanting security while still yearning for adventure. It was interesting how one good deed on David’s part led to not only saving him, but possibly brought him his deepest hearts desire, the love of a good man. I would love to read other stories about David’s life. Thanks go to Ms. Freely for an interesting read.
