Somebody Killed His Editor
With his book sales on the decline Christopher Holmes is being forced to attend a writer’s conference by his agent. She feels that it’s the only way to save his stalled career, well that and coming up with a fantastic idea for a new series. So off Christopher begrudgingly goes, dreading the ordeal. To make matters worse he suffers a series of mishaps that lead to him stumbling over a dead body in the woods outside the lodge.

Now Christopher finds himself turning to J.X. Moriarity. A fellow novelist, a former cop, oh, and lest he forget a man with whom he spent a few nights with many years ago, hot nights, nights that left him feeling things that scared him. Nights that it appears J.X. hasn’t forgotten or forgiven Christopher for, all of which could spell major problems for Christopher.

Somebody Killed His Editor is the great start to a new series about two mystery writers, Christopher Holmes, a best selling author who has seen his books start to climb down the charts, and J.X. Moriarity, a former cop and bestselling author who is at the peak of his career. Told from the viewpoint of Christopher the book was by turns snarky, mysterious, and sexy. A great combination and one that I think only Mr. Lanyon capable of pulling off, he has a way with flawed characters that leaves you loving them even though they are far from perfect.

Christopher is whiny, sarcastic, witty, and brave all rolled into one complicated man. The fact that he freely admits to his flaws makes him that much more loveable. J.X. Moriarity is much less complex on the surface. He has that manly machismo that former cops radiate and he is the perfect foil to the rather foppish Christopher. The chemistry is present whenever the men are in close proximity, sparks fly and you never know which way it will go. They will either kill each other or end up in bed! Either way the byplay between the two will leave you chuckling.

The plot was inventive and left room for us to find out more about each of these men as the series progresses. I hope that the next book lets us peek inside J.X.’s head; I’d love to see what he thinks about the events going on around him. 5 Angels for a heavenly read!
