Unholy Night
Marissa Van Dyke has not celebrated on Halloween for three years because it is the anniversary of the death of her parents, and she blames herself for their deaths. When her friend drags her off to a Halloween party, totally against her will, she vows that she will not have fun and will sneak away as soon as she can. At the party a “gypsy fortune teller” tells Marissa that she will be saved three times and then she will be free. Marissa thinks that the woman is silly and she knows that she will never be free. Then the most handsome man she has ever seen appears at her side, and she knows that she is going to have a hard time completing her night of tribute and mourning for her parents. Can she resist Neil and continue her mourning, or will Neil carry her salvation with him into her life?

Unholy Night is a quick paranormal read with a very interesting plot and good characters. The book starts with an excellent, heart-pounding scene, and I thought that I had found another absolutely excellent book. However, though this book was good, the potential that I saw in the first scene was not carried out throughout the entire book. Yes, it was good, but not excellent. At times, I saw that potential peaking through, but it did not all flow together to make the whole book excellent from beginning to end. At times, I felt that the dialogue and reactions were not as realistic as they could have been. After that first scene, the book jumped several days a couple times, and it just seemed to be a bit rushed to get to the main point of the story. Yes, dragging things out isn’t always good, but rushing them too much is just as bad. Overall, I felt that this was a good read, and being the first book of a series, there is still a lot of potential for this plot line and characters to develop into what I think will be an excellent read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, to see if Candice Gilmer will meet her potential with this series and turn my hopes for this story into a reality.
