Black London 1: Street Magic
Pete Caldecott was only sixteen when Jack Winter came into her life. He thrilled her with his devil may care attitude and his witchcraft. But then a spirit killed Jack right in front of Pete and changed her life forever. Now she is Detective Inspector Pete Caldecott and hot on the trail of a child kidnapper; one that leaves his victims brutalized so horribly that Pete will use any means to find him. When an informant offers to give her information she jumps at the chance. But this is no ordinary informant; this is Jack Winter, the man she thought dead. The years have not been kind to Jack, he is now a junkie forced to use heroin to blind himself to the supernatural world. Now, in order to save the latest child, Jack will lead Pete into the fey underworld and nothing will ever be the same in Pete's life again.
This is a difficult book to categorize; a bit of a dark urban fantasy, horror, mystery...well you get the picture. This is not a book for the faint of heart. Caitlin Kitteredge pulls no punches with this one. The subject matter throughout the book is dark, gritty, and sometimes down right horrifying, especially as it involves children and the ravages of drug abuse and the life of those who live in the underbelly of society. Pete Caldecott was a fantastic character; she was shaped by the events of her childhood and those of her adulthood as well. She was at times a contradiction and every time I thought I had a grasp on just who she was, something would change and leave me guessing as to her next action. Jack was a moral for those who fail to cope. His story was one of tragedy and sorrow and while you couldn't help but feel his pain you still wanted to tell him to man up and face his demons, figuratively and literally. The plot was gripping as well as emotionally draining at times. The things that Jack and Pete have to face along the way on their hunt for evil frankly made me cringe a few times. This is one book that I recommend to all urban fantasy readers wholeheartedly. Definitely a five Angel book!
