Bought And Paid For
Carrie Hatcher is a widow, alone with her two servants when soldiers bring a wounded Confederate colonel to her house after the battle of Chickamauga in 1863. Carrie hopes that when the doctor comes to check on the colonel, he'll help her servant Jenny - but the doctor refuses to treat Jenny because she's black. Appalled and desperate not to lose her oldest friend, Carrie decides to take scandalous action to ensure Jenny gets the medicine she needs.
Colonel Wesley McEwen wakes from a fever to find himself in bed with a mysterious woman. His wife Amelia died in childbirth a year ago, and his grief and guilt have made him reckless. When he offers Carrie a fortune to belong to him for one week, it's not just sex he wants from her. He wants the illusion of normality, a home with a loving wife. But by the end of the week, Carrie has awoken such passion in him that Wesley can't bear to let her go.
I have only one word after reading Bought And Paid For: fantastic! This is easily the best book I've read so far this year. Full of beautiful historical detail, this is a book to savour. I loved Carrie and Wesley. Even though she's been married, Carrie is sheltered and innocent, a virtuous woman - which makes her week of pleasure and seduction with Wesley even more erotic. Wesley is dark and tormented and unbelievably sexy. The love scenes are explosive and hot enough to send you up in flames. I adored this book and will be looking for more stories by Debra Glass. A Recommended Read!
