Complications
Book 4 of the Courtland Chronicles.
When Eric Courtland's long-term lover Nick announces that he's getting married to his colleague Laura, Eric feels shocked and betrayed. Eric's own marriage ended in divorce, and Nick is fed up with waiting for him to decide what he wants. Does he really love Nick, or is his fledgling political career more important? Nick can't wait forever - he wants someone who'll be there for him.
Ally, a friend of both men from their college days, is unsurprised by the break up. One night, Eric tells her that his marriage was one of political convenience. Over the following months, Eric starts pursuing Ally, using his contacts to get her a job and inviting her to exclusive parties. Ally has always liked him, and the sex between them is incredible - but when Eric proposes marriage, she's terrified it's not going to be real. If she marries him, will he break her heart, or is her love enough to carry them both?
With Complications, the reader is taken back to events set before Cat Grant's novel The Arrangement. Throughout this series, Eric is the dominant character and tragic hero. He expects everyone to do what he says, and while this makes him superbly arrogant, Cat Grant does such a great job writing him that he always manages to elicit reader sympathy - even when we know we should be rooting for Ally, who is a wonderfully likeable character with tough decisions to make.
One of the many things I love about Cat Grant's writing is her ability to wrap the reader in sensory detail. We're not just watching Ally and Eric - we're right beside them inside the story as it unfolds, feeling their confusion, pain and hope. Complications is another fantastic read in an unforgettable series.
