Smoke Screen
It's 1801, and Sir Julian Marshall is on his way back to London when he stops at an inn to meet his friend, Sir Richard Douglas, and his beautiful young wife Katerina. Though he tolerates her because of his friendship with Richard, Julian doesn't like Katerina because he's been in love with Richard for years and wishes he could have his friend all to himself.

Richard's marriage took Society by surprise. One of England's most eligible bachelors, he chose a foreign bride as his wife and ever since, the gossips have been hard at work speculating on why the marriage took place. The truth is that Richard tried to 'cure' himself of his forbidden love for Julian, but when he realises Julian returns his feelings, he's in a difficult situation. But Katerina is no innocent bride-she has a secret every bit as explosive as Richard and Julian...

Smoke Screen is a short but interesting read. Most of the action takes place in flashback and fantasies as the two men consider their feelings for one another. This was a different style of writing but very effective. I liked how neither of them rushed to take control of the situation but behaved in a quiet and responsible manner suitable to the time. Though not completely historically accurate, I enjoyed the subtle shifts of power play and the resolution of the different plot threads. Smoke Screen is a nice, gently emotional novelette that makes you think.
