The Pauper's Prize
The Pauper's Prize by Mark Alders is a homoerotic fable.
Odoacro in an ageless chimera who lives in a cave and has taken a young man, Pavel, under his protection since he was a child. Pavel has been taking care of Odoacro since he was old enough to beg for food. The only thing he has to trade is his body, but Pavel is willing to do this to take care of Odoacro. For a while, every time Pavel has gone into town he is aware that the Viscount's son Wilhelm has been following him, but he doesn't know why. Now, Wilhelm has been watching Pavel from afar and in spite of his tattered clothing, Wilhelm feels an undeniable urge to learn more about him. After many interrupted attempts, Wilhelm finally talks directly to Pavel, but Pavel only thinks that Wilhelm wants him for his body. Wilhelm asks only for a kiss, which rocks both of them and changes their lives forever. The only flaw in their lives is that Wilhelm is about to get married, very much against his will. Will Wilhelm find a way out of this predicament? What will happen to Pavel and Odoacro? Can Wilhelm and Pavel find a way to be together? How will the Viscount and Wilhelm's intended, Catherine, react when they learn of Wilhelm's desire for Pavel?
Mr. Alders has created an intricate story with mythological creatures who come to life for the reader. I loved how Encroach played an intricate part not only as Pavel's protector, but his family as well. I was fascinated to read about Odoacro's abilities and how he used them to protect himself, Pavel, and Wilhelm too. Pavel couldn't believe that someone as important as Wilhelm would ever want him until Odoacro encouraged him to follow his feelings. It was beautiful to watch how Pavel and Wilhelm were willing to put their lives on the line to protect each other. This is the first book by Mr. Alders and definitely not the last that I will be reading. Thanks go to Mr. Alders for a great read.
