The Lone Texan
Ever since he met her when he was fifteen, Drummond Roak's been certain that, when he was older, Sage McMurray would be his woman. After nearly four years Sage's back, back in Texas and heading for home - Whispering Mountain. Now, she's Dr. Lander, and she plans to open a practice in town. Only, before she can make it home again, she's taken hostage. Sage must summon all her courage and keep her wits about her in order to stay alive. Worse is yet to come; her captors auction her off to the highest bidder...
The Lone Texan has a strong story line and wonderful characters, transporting the reader back to Texas in 1859. I really enjoyed the chance to finally read Sage and Drum's story! I particularly admired Sage's drive and courage to become a Doctor, which meant leaving behind family and the land she loved, for several years. Like Drum, I was surprised to discover Sage had married; I was even more surprised that she was widowed too. I really enjoyed the battle of wills and spirited relationship between Sage and Drum. Both are strong, independent characters, and they constantly clash, which I found entertaining to read. The Lone Texan is the fourth book in Jodi Thomas' Whispering Mountain series, preceded by Texas Rain, Texas Princess and Tall, Dark, and Texan. I feel that The Lone Texan does stand alone, but Jodi Thomas teased us with interludes between Sage and Drum in previous books, which served to whet the reader's appetites for this book.
The McMurrays are one family I've loved reading about, and I'm sad to see the end of the series. For me, the Whispering Mountain series encapsulates all I love about western historicals - cowboys, wonderful characters (both main and supporting) and multiple storylines, set against the romantic (and at times dangerous) American West. Jodi Thomas was a new-to-me author in 2009; she's quickly become one of my favourites and I can't wait to read more of her stories. If you haven't tried Jodi Thomas, reach for one of her stories next time you're looking for something to read; I'm certain you won't be disappointed.
