The Bite of Silence
Twyla Tafel is just a small town girl from Meiers Corners looking for a bit of adventure and seizing the chance when an opportunity presents itself. She's off to New York to watch the ball drop in Times Square for New Years and hopes to find more opportunities for adventure while there. Finding Nikos, a man who screams danger and excitement, on her plane seems serendipitous to her plans. But after Twyla uncovers a plot to unleash insane vampires upon the revelers in Times Square, she will have to find a way to stop a massacre with only Nikos and a band of friends to help her. Sometimes you should be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

In The Bite of Silence we met a fabulous new cast of characters. Twyla Tafel, yet another masterful creation from the mind of Mary Hughes, is a woman heading to New York for New Year's Eve and looking for adventure. Twyla is quirky, snarky, intriguing, and hilarious. From the moment Twyla opened her mouth I was hooked. Of course, having her talking to the deliciously sexy vampire Nikos (a man who left this reader decidedly dehydrated from all the drooling) and then goldenly, gorgeous Klaus soon after certainly sealed the deal and made it a for sure winner. The Bite of Silence has all the components of a good book: strong heroine, sexy, alpha, growlingly surly love interest, interesting and compelling secondary characters, a great plot, and an author that can write. What makes it a great book is that the author not only writes, but she writes well and can tell a tale that leaves you alternately laughing your butt off with holding your breath in anticipation of the next situation in which the characters find themselves. I love Ms. Hughes' sense of the irreverent and think that her skill grows with each story she pens. I can't wait to see where she takes us next in this fabulous world she has built. Biting me Softly can't get her soon enough for this fangirl! I miss Meiers Corners and all its citizens.
