Project Alpha: Sweet Charity
Since Adrian escaped General Benson Caruthers' death squad at eighteen, he's been leading resistant fighters against the General's security forces. Finally, after years of hit and run tactics, the time has come to take the General and his shock troops down, along with the Piedmont Corporation that created and exploited genetically enhanced Alphas like himself. But first, they must blow the Gate, a domed energy barrier separating the poor in the destroyed outer city from those living lavishly in the inner city.

Scarred from her father's abuses, Charity Caruthers knows firsthand how cruel the General is. When she discovers a captured resistance fighter strung up and bleeding out in the General's torture chamber, she risks everything to escape the inner city with the dying man's message for Adrian. Her father knows where Adrian and his people are, and in three days, he'll attack.

Neither Adrian nor Charity expects the passion that erupts between them the moment they meet. Charity's never experienced a man's gentle touch until Adrian. When she reveals who her father is, everyone mistrusts her but Adrian. He has the confidence in her to accompany her alone into the inner city to blow the Gate, but when he's caught soundly in the General's trap and it looks as though Charity has indeed betrayed him, will their love and his belief in her survive her apparent treachery?

With Sweet Charity, the third and final book in her Project Alpha series, N. J. Walters has once again produced a wonderful story of love, courage and devotion. Arguably the best of all three books, Sweet Charity is a thrilling page turner with more breathless passion than the first two books put together. My only issue with it revolves around the instantaneous sexual relationship between Charity and Adrian, as it began with so little build up of sexual tension. Nevertheless, Ms. Walters did a magnificent job of bringing the primary series story line, that of bringing down the Gate and taking out the bad guys, to a conclusion of epic proportions. Furthermore, she did it in a minimum amount of words without sacrificing dramatic effect.

Charity is an appealing heroine who finally finds the courage, despite her fear, to break free of her father's control and take up the righteous fight against him. As an Alpha, Adrian possesses a dominant nature in bed, but he's so gentle with Charity, even when he's binding her hands to pipes, that you nearly sigh out loud with pleasure.

Although Sweet Charity can be read as a standalone, I'd suggest reading the previous two novels in the series, Embracing Silence and Have Mercy, first for a more enjoyable experience. The first two books, about Alphas Tienan and Logan, who appear in this book, are well worth the time and money you'll spend on them. In book one you get a more thorough picture of Adrian's resistance fighters, along with a feel for his soft spot for children through the eyes of his adopted sister Silence.
