Chasing Butterflies
Nolan Brooks is traveling through a small, sleepy town in Tennessee when his car suddenly breaks down. He finds himself stranded there until it can be fixed. Apparently his car has chosen to breakdown at the one time of year that the town is inundated with visitors. The Purple Lacewing makes the town a stop on its annual migration and the town has a festival to celebrate.
This causes a shortage of rooms at the inn and Nolan finds himself with a roommate. The mysterious, handsome, charming Gray Ashton, a man who Nolan finds himself feeling entirely too comfortable with, a man who could make Nolan change his plans. But Gray has secrets, secrets that prevent him from allowing Nolan to get too close.
I really enjoyed getting to know Nolan, he is a man on a mission. He is taking a trip, both metaphorically and physically. He has vowed to become a man that is responsible and "grown up" He is an easy to like character, a man still struggling to find his niche in the world, a man who has drifted along for so long letting other people define who he is that he finds himself lost. He's like a piece of dandelion fluff flowing with the wind until he lands in Brushfoot, Tennessee and begins to take root. Gray wasn't as richly drawn and at times his mood swings seemed rather abrupt. As we only saw events from Nolan's point of view the reader can only gauge Gray's actions based on how Nolan perceives them. As the story unfolded I became more sympathetic to Gray's actions and he therefore became more likeable. I loved the brief glimpses of the townsfolk and would love to revisit Brushfoot and these enjoyable characters again.
