Clean Slate
John and Chris have been given a job similar to many they've done before. Eliminate Russian mob affiliate Andrei Voronin and get out. But this job quickly becomes more difficult. Someone has beaten them to the punch and attempted to take out Andrei, only to leave him barely alive. John convinces his superiors that Andrei may be more valuable to them alive and capable of giving them information. Reasoning that they agree to and John and Chris find themselves suddenly taking care of the handsome Andrei as he heals. A feat complicated by the fact that Andrei has amnesia and the cover story involves the men pretending that they are people Andrei can trust, people he can trust because the three share an intimacy that goes beyond mere friendship. But what will the three do when the ruse becomes the truth and the people who were out to get Andrei discover that he is still alive and will stop at nothing to take him out for good?
It's odd how much I liked this story considering I didn't like any of the characters. But then again Chris, John, and Andrei aren't really the type of people you would like. I did find the Chris and John angle quite interesting and liked how Andrei fit into the equation. I didn't like how Chris treated Andrei and found it hard to get over my initial dislike of him. Once I began to understand the reasons behind his actions I, while never really liking him, began to tolerate him. On the other hand John quickly overcame my first impression of him and I found that he was probably my favorite of the three. Andrei never really developed as a full character for me and felt more like a prop to provide the necessary push for the other two to come together. Despite my feelings of the characters I did enjoy the story and how it played out in the end. It was well written and the plotting solidly thought out. I will read more by these two authors in the future.
