Risky Maneuvers
Mikhail Volkov plays by his own rules. He's a man for hire and sets his own price and does things the way he wants to do them. When the CIA comes calling with an offer he can't resist he finds himself face to face with his biggest regret...Devon "D" Dearborn.
D Dearborn had big plans for his career. He was going to follow in his father's footsteps and be part of the Army's Delta Force. He succeeded in becoming a top-level tank commander and served as a go between for the CIA and a certain Russian mercenary. But when things heated up between Mikhail and himself he was forced to rethink his goals. He resigned from his position and took up driving an 18-wheeler.
When D's CIA brother shows up with an offer that he can't refuse D finds himself back in the company of Mikhail. A place he doesn't want to be because the emotions that he thought long buried have risen back to the surface and he is helpless to resist. Especially since Mikhail is doing everything in his power to remind D of what they once had.
Risky Maneuvers started off with a bang and kept going until the last third of the book. Unfortunately it was that last third that lowered my rating of what could have been a wonderful book in my opinion. Up until that point the storyline was intriguing, the characters solidly built, charismatic and interesting, and there was enough action to keep the story flowing towards a climactic ending. Then the story suddenly derailed and became a B grade sci-fi movie. Don't get me wrong, I love sci-fi. I even have a love for cheesy sci-fi movies. What I don't have a love for is a complete plot switch in the middle of a story that had the potential to be great. I won't even start on how I felt about the abrupt ending other than to say I hated it. I was very disappointed in this story; I have read other works by both authors and loved them. This one has to go onto my "sorry, not my thing" pile and gets a three angel review.
