Riot Boy
Riot Boy by Katey Hawthorne is a contemporary homoerotic paranormal story.
Etienne was dragged to a bar by his sister Susanne, after his breakup with his boyfriend Paul, to help get him out of his slump. While there, Etienne catches the eye of one of the punk rockers and can't take his eyes off him. To Etienne's surprise, the object of his desire, Brady, not only approaches him, but kisses the daylights out of Etienne before he disappears. The next day, Etienne realizes his credit card is missing and whom do you think turns up with it, saying that he found it? Brady. Etienne gives Brady his number before he leaves and Brady promises to call him. Susanne isn't happy about Etienne's new love interest, but is willing to stay out of it as long as he promises to call if he needs her help; as she's a police officer. Brady returns and their time together continues with Brady constantly disappearing, leaving Etienne confused and concerned. When members of Brady's family appear, Etienne begins to question exactly who Brady is, especially when he sees Brady fight off a strange fire that one of his family members appears to have made from frost and ice. Who is Brady and where do his strange abilities come from? Can Etienne deal with these frightening abilities? And are his feelings strong enough for the difficulties ahead?
It was fascinating to read how the many paranormal aspects were worked into a contemporary setting. Brady was an intriguing individual with a complex personality that was interesting to get to know as the story unfolded. His abilities to control ice, and how he used it in his everyday life were captivating. The visual descriptions of Brady, from his tattoos, dark ringed eyes, and his luscious body bring him to life for the reader. I loved how Etienne reacted so out of character by falling for Brady and how his love changed Brady's life. The idea of super villains isn't new, but the way Brady's family used their skills was unique, even though they weren't very successful at being bad! Kudos goes to P.L. Nunn for an incredible cover!
