Dulce et Decorum Est
Dulce et Decorum Est by J.L. Merrow is part of the Dreamspinner Naughty or Nice 2010 Advent Calendar.

George recently moved to London and is hoping the room for rent he noticed at the post office is still available. When George arrives he meets another lodger, Matthew, who is looking for his cat, Marmaduke. George is drawn towards Matthew's personality and handsome demeanor, in spite of his war injury. George meets the owner, Mrs. MacDonald, and after they discuss his work situation, she offers him the room. The difficult point is George's room is right next to Matthew's. George is determined to keep his distance, but when Matthew is having a nightmare George goes to help. George thinks Matthew might be interested in him, but is too afraid to chance revealing his feelings. George knows that if his past is revealed Matthew would never forgive him and he would lose everything. What is George hiding and will they get a chance to deepen their friendship?

This story was a thought-provoking look into historical England. The period setting was interesting in how George dwelt with society's response towards what they considered abnormal behavior: being gay. George was determined to keep his past hidden, but will it really affect him if others learn about it. Matthew on the surface is a happy-go-lucky guy, but just as other soldiers, he lives with the trauma of war. I found the character believable, but felt the story ended abruptly leaving the reader without closure. Otherwise, I found the story enjoyable.
