Defying the Odds is part of the Battered Hearts series.

When Melody shows up in small town Garnet to evade an abusive ex-husband she didn't count on falling for a man who makes his money brawling. But fall she does. Not only is he a fighter, he's Clay Powers, a famous championship fighter and his desire to give her all the comforts and even basic needs she doesn't have unnerves her. Little by little, Mel gives in to his charm and perseverance, hoping against all odds that perhaps this man won't be a repeat play of her marriage. Mel's also realistic and knows it's only a matter of time before her ex finds her and while she doesn't want Clay to be hurt in the crossfire, he's not going to let her go so easily.

This couple really tugs at the heartstrings. Clay's an orphan. Melody's an abuse survivor. While both have gumption and are strong in character, neither are book smart, allowing the reader to witness what might be considered a flaw. Their fervor for one another is delightful and it wasn't long before I was rooting mightily for Clay and Melody's happily ever after.

It would seem Defying the Odds is the first of a series. After reading this one, I eagerly await its next installment.
