Makenna James is running to catch the elevator, which she does thanks to a "Good Samaritan" inside who holds open the door for her. Makenna doesn't get a good look at her companion because she's distracted by trying to hold onto her bags and cell phone. All Makenna wants to do is go home and relax with a bottle of wine after the busy day she's had. But then, the elevator jerks to a stop and the lights go out.

Caden Grayson can't help but be amused over the frazzled redhead. He barely gets a good look at her because the elevator goes dark and he starts to panic. Caden can't stand dark, closed in spaces ever since he was involved in a car accident when he was younger. His friends would find humor in his fear seeing as he's covered in tattoos and piercings, but his shell on the outside tells a completely different story of the man on the inside.

Soon Makenna and Caden are sharing stories about their lives and their past. She starts to comfort Caden when she finds out his fear of the dark, which turns into a hot and heavy make out session between the two. She's incredibly attracted to Caden, although she doesn't have any idea what he looks like. Then the lights come back on, and when they finally get a good look at one another, they have to decide if they should continue what they have started.

Hearts in Darkness is sensual and steamy with two great characters. Caden is a very unique male lead character with a very tender side and a slight self-esteem issue because of the way he looks. His piercings and tattoos are his armor, or so Makenna points out during their exchange. She admires that about Caden, can't help herself, and shows him how special he is.

After reading this latest by Laura Kaye, you may start humming Aerosmith's Love in an Elevator. Ms. Kaye has written a sweet and sexy tale that is both a man's and woman's ultimate fantasy. Not only has Ms. Kaye written a believable situation to include true to life reactions from both of the two main protagonists, through conversation, they have become attracted to one another with wonderful results. Hearts in Darkness is perfect for any romance fan.
