In her latest book, About That Night, Julie James brings us the story of Kyle Rhodes, billionaire heir, computer genius and newly released ex-con, and Rylann Pierce, up-and-coming assistant US attorney. Their first meeting was actually in 2005 at a college bar, which ended in "the kiss". However, Kyle's mother's sudden death prevented their meeting the next day as planned. Kyle's life took an unprecedented turn for the very worse when his erstwhile girlfriend, almost fiancée, posted pictures of herself on Twitter, frolicking with another man. Humiliated, Kyle gets drunk and in a fit of self-pitying rage, does what he does best: hacks into the system and shuts down Twittter. In our new world of paranoia, Kyle is branded a prime cyber terrorist and sent to prison.
After his twin sister cuts a deal with the Feds, Kyle is released, but it's hard to know who is the most shocked by the fact that Rylann is the attorney assigned to do so. Both remember their one kiss, which had felt so astoundingly right, and Kyle is determined to follow up on it with his new found attitude of taking nothing for granted. When Rylann is forced to call upon Kyle to help with the prosecution of another case, Kyle has no problem with a little black mail in order to get her back in his arms, and this time it'll be for good.

Will Rylann be willing to risk her reputation in the department for a man who let her down just because he can make her burn? Or will she give her own ex-boyfriend, almost fiancé, another chance? Will Kyle be able to overcome his felony status both in the business community and in Rylann's eyes?

Perhaps it is a somewhat recurrent theme in her books about lawyers from Chicago, but Julia James brings a fresh take on her story of a gutsy, hard working woman who is able to charm the pants off a born-with-a-silver-spoon-in-the-mouth man. Rylann is smart and sassy, earning the nickname "Meth Lab Rylann" from her dedication to her job. Kyle is just as smart, sexy as all get out, and equally determined to do well in his chosen career, despite his infamously poor decisions. The two shoot of sparks that can be seen miles away, and it is a ton of fun watching Rylann try to maintain a respectable distance, while Kyle continues to invade, jumping on every opportunity to press his case. His determination to win her back is impossible to resist, and is what makes him a classic Julie James hero. About One Night is definitely a keeper, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fast-paced romance packed full of quick dialogue, great characters and an intriguing plot...yet another reason why Ms. James has become a go-to author for me.
