Out of Reach
Erin Baker is a CIA agent without a mission. Family responsibilities dictated that she come home and care for her sister and her sister's child. She gave up her dangerous and demanding covert officer position in exchange for a more normal assignment. However, a jog in the park changes everything; one morning, she notices a man that sends her stumbling back to the past. Something about the man seems familiar as Erin recalls bits and pieces of a child's memory, the memory of the day her sister was kidnapped.
When another child comes up missing, Erin is convinced that the same man who kidnapped her sister is responsible for this new abduction. Without hesitation she contacts the FBI agent in charge of the investigation, Alec Donovan, and tells him what she knows. Together, they work against time to try and find the latest missing child. The investigation has many twists and turns as well as its share of dead ends. The closer they come to finding out the truth, the more danger they place themselves in; for this kidnapping is not just a simple kidnapping, instead it reveals a black market system where children are the commodities. It will take all their skill to be able to save the child in time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the latest offering by Patricia Lewin. In Out of Reach she presents child kidnappings in a truly sinister manner. Her characters are well developed and extremely realistic. She has a unique ability to embody her characters with human strengths and frailties. Erin is an especially enjoyable heroine because she is not perfect. Instead she is a woman that is struggling valiantly to slay the demons of her past as well as protect those in her present. She makes mistakes and is able to be hurt, but she never stops fighting for what is right. I couldn't help but applaud Alec and Erin's dedication and determination to win, even as the opposition seemed to stay one step ahead of them. The storyline flows quickly and is filled with details and characters that make the investigation come alive. Even though readers discover the facts and clues of the investigation along with Alec and Erin, the ending will still surprise them. I highly recommend this book for fans of suspense. Readers will not regret the time devoted to reading such a well-written story.
