The ShadowWind Trilogy Book I: The Shadowlord

When Aradia is informed that one of her sisters has been kidnapped, she sets out with others in her clan to get her back. The rescue party starts their quest without the permission or knowledge of the Elders. They know this is wrong, but they cannot leave one of their own to the revolving Rysalians, yet to ask for permission may be justification to start another war. The group does this without informing the Elders because they are hoping to avoid yet another war and will not leave one of their own to the revolting Rysalians. Their journey is halted almost from the beginning. Worsening weather causes them stop for the night at a nearby inn. It is at this inn that Aradia comes face to face with a man from her past.

Jaelan recognized her immediately; he'd dreamt about her, thought about her almost daily for many years. Jaelan sees it as fate that their paths have crossed again and this time he intends to see that they are not parted. Aradia doesn't remember who Jaelan is, but the tangible connection she feels for him is overwhelming. When Jaelan rebuffs her, Aradia doesn't understand why his action hurts her. Later, Jaelan reminds her who he is and just what it was that she did for him. He advises her that he knows of her plan to save her sister. He delivers an ultimatum, send the rescue party home and cease her mission to save her sister, or he will have them all arrested. Aradia knows that this is a fate worse than death. Aradia sends the others home, but intends to continue the journey on her own. Instead of arresting her, Jaelan offers a compromise… marry him, consent to be his wife, stay with him and he will see that her sister is returned home, unharmed.

Jaelan is one of 'The Dark Lords of Death'; he is the leader of the King's personal security. The King is not pleased that Jaelan married without permission and to someone outside his own kind. There are forces behind the scenes that are out to destroy him, as well as Aradia. Jaelan has vowed to protect his wife; he will die for her if necessary. Yet the question remains, will Aradia do the same for him?

I was completely and entirely captivated by is story. The ShadowWind Trilogy Book I: The Shadowlord is a book that encompasses all the features of an excellent story. This book has mystery and intrigue, action and adventure, as well as a love that defies time and reason. The plot is thrilling as well as heart stopping. The character development is outstanding; there are characters readers will love and some that they will love to hate. Charlotte Boyett-Compo doesn't stop with the main characters; the secondary roles are just as excellent. The friendships Jaelan has with the other Dark Lords is touching. The inexplicable bond and trust that develops between Jaelen and Aradia is realistically portrayed; they haven't just met, their first meeting established a connection. It isn't often that I will stay up all night to read a book, but with The ShadowWind Trilogy Book I: The Shadowlord, I saw the sun rise. I could not put this book down. Charlotte Boyett-Compo has magnificently crafted this story and I cannot wait for book 2. I highly recommend this book and this author. 5 Angels!
