When his wedding is interrupted by a supposed ally wanting his father's throne, Prince Lyo must place his fate in the hands of the serving girl, Diamina. He cannot understand why this slave, this woman, thinks so little of him and his abilities.
Diamina only wants the opportunity to travel south to find her mother. When the palace is thrown into chaos, she takes the chance to escape her most recent form of slavery. A quirk of fate places the prince's life into her hands, and as her talking cat reminds her, once you take responsibility for someone's life, you cannot back away.
Diamina helps the prince escape before the palace is locked down completely. She realizes that he is ill-equipped to even secure passage on a ship to take them to the triad which will recognize and support Lyo's right to the throne. Lyo soon realizes that Diamina is much more than he first thought her to be.
This was a great quest story from Ms. Winston. Diamina and Lyo must grow as characters in order to succeed, and they do. The reader can't help but root for them. This ability to show the evolution of characters, without getting pedantic, seems to be in short supply in many of today's novels, but Ms. Winston has mastered this important aspect of storytelling. The sensual tension in this novel never lets up. If you're a lover of a good old quest fantasy and erotica, look no further for your next read.Reviewed by: Lady Luck
