An Irresistible Bachelor
Jackson Walker is a scion from one of the oldest and wealthiest families. He has reputation for being a playboy. He has gotten his family's finances back on track again after his father's bankruptcy. Jack has decided on a few issues in his life. He has proposed marriage to his friend, Blair. She comes from the same milieu and knows what to expect. Blair also knows he doesn't love her. He also has plans to run for Governor of Massachusetts. Callie Burke is trained in the field of art conservation. She has forged a relationship with her half-sister, Grace. Her father had a long-standing relationship with her mother. She and her mother were kept hidden and only upon their deaths did she reach out to Grace. They have agreed to keep their relationship a secret. Callie is hired to restore an expensive painting for Jack. She needs the money and this will further her career aspirations. Callie makes a deep impression on Jack. Jack pursues her but Callie is not at all sure he is the man for her.
An Irresistible Bachelor is the sequel to Ms. Bird's An Unforgettable Lady (Grace's story). Although the reviewer would recommend you read the first book first, An Irresistible Bachelor can and does stand alone. We get a whisper of Callie's past in the first book, it is thoroughly explored in this one. Her past has forged her into the woman she is today. She took on the responsibility of nursing her mother until she passed away. She doesn't want to be a "kept" woman and has strived to make it on her own. Her career is very important because she loves it and it will give her the independence she wants. Jack is the epitome of the man who has everything except what is most important. He never thought he would be hit with cupid's arrow but life tends to throw you curve balls.
An Irresistible Bachelor is a wonderful conclusion to this series. The characterizations of Jack and Callie hit the right notes. Their relationship slowly builds to a crescendo and takes the reader with it. The author has created two extremely likable people. There is no glaring or obvious plot device to keep these two apart. These two deal with their problems head on and everything is resolved in a timely fashion. The reader can empathize with Callie's decisions since we can see where she is coming from. There are quite a few secondary characters but they don't detract from Callie and Jack's story. This book is about Jack and Callie and they shine throughout the story. This book was an extremely enjoyable read. This reviewer finished it in one sitting.
