Miracles

When Kate finds herself stranded in a northwester storm, a stranger comes out of the night to help her. She’s wrecked her ankle terribly and has to rely 100% on the kindness of this new arrival. Kate was numb with cold and shock, but that didn’t stop her from becoming aware of Sam.

Sam, to be blunt, is running. He’s running from his past as he tries to get a handle on the enormous changes to his life. As a test pilot Sam always lived right on the edge. Since his accident, everything has changed. The thing he loved most, flying, now fills him with uncertainty. Sam has never been the staying kind of man. With his job, whilst he’d never been cold or callous, it just didn’t do to make lasting attachments. Then he finds Kate in the storm. She’s hurt badly and he can’t bring himself to help her. He knows he can take away her pain, but that’s exactly why he came to this town to get away from the people that knew what he was capable of; those that begged and pleaded for him to help them. As he learns just how much this little town depends on Kate, the guilt is crushing. How can he not help her, stop her pain, when all he has to do is touch her?

Kate wants all or nothing. Never again will she subject herself to a man who doesn’t love her, after all, a girl has to protect her heart. Sam won’t stay; by his own admission he’s only here long enough to “figure things out”. As she tries to keep her distance, Sam keeps pulling her closer. How does one shield her heart from a man as lost and confused as Sam, from a man that has never heard the words “I love you” in his life? Kate can’t. Her heart opens to him and the love she feels for Sam encompasses them both. All Kate can do now is pray that her love is enough, but when Sam’s secret comes close to being discovered, will he stay or will he continue to run?

Mary Kirk has given readers a powerful, tender love story. My heart physically ached for Sam and his plight; to live your life a certain way for years, to love that life and then suddenly that’s all gone and everything has changed, would cause fears for anyone. Ms. Kirk pens Sam’s experiences so that readers can’t help but feel what it’s like for him. Also understandable is the way Kate feels; she has loved and lost, and will do anything not to experience that again. Personally, I was a little peeved at Kate’s “all or nothing attitude”. To purposely deny someone in need is hurtful. Kate has her reasons, which readers will later come to understand. Ms. Kirk has written such an exceptional story that readers are captivated, and that’s the beauty of Miracles. This book is, without a doubt, one for the keeper shelf. 5 Angels!
