Whispers in the Rain
Deina has an eerie suspicion that someone is watching her, tracking her. Memories of a gruesome childhood keep the nagging misgivings at the forefront of her mind. When Deina’s father gives her a newspaper clipping of an upcoming play audition, she doesn’t think she can go through with it. Music has always been a passion for Deina, but since her mother’s murder; whenever Deina sings, all she hears are her mother’s screams.
Micah can’t stand to watch Deina become anymore reclusive than she already is. Micah all but manipulates Deina into going to the auditions. Deina’s been his best friend since high school and somewhere along the way he started looking at Deina for more. As Deina doesn’t return Micah’s interest, or so he thinks, lately all they seem to do is fight and upset each other. When her job continues to pull her further from him, Micah wants to rage at the injustice of it all. He feels as if he is losing her a little more each day.
There’s something sinister going on in this town. Someone out there is preying on the citizens and it’s up to Deina to find out who. At this point she can’t trust anyone. Her partner is acting strange and a family member of one of the victims clearly believes her niece was dating and later became afraid of a cop. Deina begins to wonder if the sins of the past have come back to haunt her; if this is her punishment for escaping her childhood when others failed. Will she and Micah realize the depth of their feelings for one another? Will Deina find the culprit before it’s too late and how many people will die before she can find out?
Whispers in the Rain closes out the Dark Room series and what a fantastic ending. In what could be her most suspenseful yet, Sue Thornton delivers a book that will grab readers from the beginning. The many layers of the story are riveting. You have Deina’s struggle to overcome the death of her mother and to learn to love music again. You have the deepening relationship of Deina and Micah; both who think the other doesn’t “feel that way” about the other. Micah’s feelings for Deina are powerful. He’s only just come to realize how much he loves her and she continually places herself in danger. What do you do when the woman you love is a cop and it’s her job to serve and protect?
As if all that weren’t enough you have the intense murder mystery going on. Who is doing this and why? Do the murders being committed now have anything to do with the two other previous killings at two different times? Sue Thornton pens all this in one exceptional novel. Ms. Thornton concludes this series in a most satisfying manner, while staying true to the original romantic suspense plot. Whispers in the Rain is an excellent read and comes highly recommended! 5 Angels!
