This is a non-fiction book on a topic often ignored by other sex manuals. Told in a casual style, using straightforward language and accurate terminology, anderson presents basic information on masturbation for women. These facts are told in five chapters entitled: Masturbation Facts, Taboos, and Myths; Your Body, Orgasm and Health; Jill’n-Off: Batteries Not Included; Toys Are NOT Only For Kids; and Resources.

anderson presents an amazing array of methods of masturbation, beginning with basic relaxation techniques, progressing through Tantric, manual, dildos, vibrators, and other toys, to giving manual pleasure to or mutual masturbation with a loved one. I was happy to see the techniques for male masturbation included, since women are often not taught methods to assist in a male partner’s pleasure, but must simply feel around (so to speak) for the best way to handle it.

I am humbled at the work that went into this book. The author selflessly tested a multitude of sex toys before she felt like she could recommend them to the reader. Such dedication! Each description of a toy contains an active weblink, so you can actually take a look at each one she mentions. (Some of the links were not directly to the toy in question, but to the website on which one can find them.) The section discussing the dangers of low-quality sex toys was an eye-opener to me—who knew that Phthalates (chemical additives commonly used in manufacturing vinyls and soft plastics—like in sex toys) have been revealed to leave high concentrations of solvents in mucus membranes? I second anderson’s recommendation that every woman should read the information on the “Buyer Be-Womyn’s’Ware” page at www.womynsware.com.

I was also very impressed with the Resource chapter, which gives a detailed bibliography of educational and erotic books, URLs for reliable online sources of sexual toys for women, information on national experts in women’s masturbation, and hot masturbation websites. In my opinion, this is a work that every woman should have on her bookshelf (or Pocket PC) for the sheer volume of information it brings together in a short, succinct form.
