Pot of Gold

In the 18th century Caribbean, Eleanor Fitzwilliam stowed away on one of her fiancé’s ships, The Rainbow. Not because she wanted to be with him, but because she wanted to get away from him. Instead, Eleanor finds that pirate Robin Steele has hijacked The Rainbow, and plans to sail her to an unknown island. Eleanor is stuck onboard and must go along for the ride. Steele asserts that he has acquired a magical gold coin from a leprechaun, and that it will lead him to a treasure of gold coins. Trying to get Steele to do her bidding and drop her off at the nearest populated island, Eleanor steals the gold coin and runs, with Steele following. The end up on a deserted island and, abandoned by the ship’s crew, they discover a rum smuggler’s cache ... or is it more than just barrels of rum?

This book is hard to classify, since it has a quasi-historical background of the Caribbean pirate culture as well as a paranormal element of magic. The novella is only 92 pages long, but packs a lot of adventures into those pages. The events and scenes flash by so quickly that one hardly has the time to adjust to scene changes. The hero and heroine are both quite likeable people, and their love scenes are extremely hot and fairly explicit. I found this combination of factors produced a whimsical story, which is perfect for a light summer read.
