The Man For The Job

Mike Carlton is a former cop turned P.I. and Gwyneth Wells is a high-powered divorce attorney. They meet when Mike is recommended to Gwyneth as a bodyguard. It seems that someone has been shadowing Gwyneth wherever she goes for the past two weeks, and she’s beginning to get nervous. When you come right down to it, there are a number of people who’d like to see her dead for a variety of reasons. This includes her ex-fiancé Richard, the attorney for a mob boss, and her Aunt Lilith, who feels that Gwyneth’s mother’s estate was divided up unfairly—since Lilith didn’t get anything. After meeting Mike, Gwyneth is not sure he can protect her—his sense of humor is irrepressible, and his behavior is absolutely unacceptable. He is irreverent, he dislikes lawyers, and he kissed her only an hour after they met!

This is a full-length romantic suspense novel, with the emphasis on suspense! The plot is very twisty, but the writing is so well done that the reader has no difficulty following it. Satisfyingly, all loose ends are neatly tied up at the end. The romance is excellent, with very sensual love scenes. The author seeks to emulate the writing style of Dashiell Hammett, although it is done with a lighter touch and a lot more humor. What engaged me the most was the fast and witty style that kept the pace up and kept me interested in the book. I’d say this is a great light mystery for someone who likes a dash of romance with their suspense!
