The Haunting

Jessica, the widow of a homicide detective, is recruited by her aged aunt to investigate a reputedly haunted house. Many years before, the old woman’s fiancé was murdered there and Aunt Alice has decided that she wants to find the answers to the long unsolved crime. Together with Emily, a psychic octogenarian who cares for her aunt, Jessica takes on the job of searching the basement of the old house, where the housekeeper lived until her own recent death. Emily is a feisty old woman and, to Jessica’s horror, even has her own gun, a Glock semiautomatic.

When they come across the body of a strange man in the old mansion, the real adventure begins. With the second floor full of malevolent ghosts, some with rather disturbing ideas, Jessica and Emily find themselves trapped in the basement of the house, their only ally being the ghost of the late tenant. When even the weather turns against them, taking the form of a major hurricane, the women find themselves in deep water indeed.

The Haunting is a grand story with enough suspense to keep a reader not only interested, but curious and even on edge. Ms Hunt’s characters are fun, considering that two male characters end up being victims. The tenacious old lady displays surprising strength and endurance for one her age, and proves to be a real asset to Jessica. The addition of good detail and excellent description makes The Haunting a very enjoyable read.
