Michael tells Nikki to give up on Monica; she is already lost to the human world. A teenage vampire with an insatiable blood lust, Jasper now has control of Monica and has his sights set on Nikki. He intends to manipulate her abilities and use her mind as a tool for his own cruel schemes.

Michael Kelly knows the depths that his foe will go to in order to get what he wants. Jasper truly is insane and had already murdered innocents before he became a vampire. Michael does everything short of mind control to keep Nikki away from Jasper, but he misjudges Nikki's stubbornness and her inquisitive nature. Before he can stop her, Nikki is involved with them both. Jasper begins to torture Nikki though her thoughts and Michael is connecting with her in a way that he has not experienced before. Nikki's responses to Michael bind him closer, but he knows that he must push her away before she learns the truth about him.

Keri Arthur's first book in the Michael and Nikki series is intense from the first page. The reader is thrown into a fast action scene, which unfolds in a manner similar to many horror movies. Danger is just around every corner and the characters heedlessly walk towards it. The plot is expertly constructed, the reader never expecting what is on the next page. Ms. Arthur words flow so smoothly that this reader was never pulled out of the story until the last line.

The author's contrasting main characters serve to make this story more realistic. A sassy stubborn woman who is always right, must learn to give up her all for the man she loves. Michael is a strong silent hero, he likes to appear when danger is imminent and fade into the shadows when it's over. Nikki is the trial of his life; he must fight his growing feelings of love to keep her from the dark world in which he lives.
