Chocolate Magic
Kat Roth isn’t over her ex-husband Mark Denham and when she sees him coming out of a Starbucks with a blond in tow; all her feelings for him come rushing back to her. Nevertheless, she’s determined to move on. Unfortunately, her cousin Fritz has other plans. He wants to see Mark and Kat reunited and married once more. His plan, to start the Kandy for Kids campaign in which both Roth Confectionary and Denham Candy will cooperate together in order to raise money for charity. Fritz plans it so that Mark and Kat, CEO’s of Denham Candy and Roth Confectionary respectively, will have to work together in order to plan the big event. Kat is especially upset because Fritz made up the Kandy for Kids campaign on the spur of the moment, and now she only has a month to get everything organized. But Mark plans to help, and he’s hoping that by working close with Kat again, the old romance will spark anew.
Mark devises schemes to work closely together with Kat, all with the help of Fritz, though he doesn’t know it. He shows up unexpectedly for breakfasts and asks her to lunch, all in the name of working on the Kandy for Kids campaign. His real motive though is to start to build a relationship with Kat again. It isn’t until they are stranded at a cabin, forced to work on the Creating Loving Relationships training program that Fritz cleverly leaves for them, that the two start looking at their relationship, old and new, from a different perspective. CLR helps Mark to see all the things he admires about Kat, and it makes Kat miss Mark all the more. But there’s trouble brewing in the candy companies, as it seems that Roth Confectionary is going to have to merge with Denham Candy or sell out altogether. Kat is devastated, especially since she has been working on a brand new product, Chocolate Magic, that she’s sure will restore Roth Confectionary back into the black. Mark knows more than he’s telling Kat about the potential merger though, and when the truth leaks, it looks like their new relationship is headed down the tubes again, just like their marriage. Can Mark and Kat work it out, or will any hope of a personal merger be lost forever?
Chocolate Magic was truly magical. It was a great story, one of the best I’ve read in a long time. What I liked about it best was the relationships. Kat and Mark were really true to life characters. Their relationship faced many of the problems that face any relationship nowadays. Yet, even with all the problems between them, they were able to work it out, to prove that it was their love for each other that was the true magic. This story was filled with romance, which I loved. There was even a secondary romance involving Fritz and Norma, Kat’s secretary, who was a bit older than him, 48 to his 24. Nonetheless, it was a sweet subplot that proves that love can occur at any time between anyone.
The concept of feuding chocolate companies working together on the campaign worked very well to help reunite two people who have been missing each other for a long time. Filled with lots of humor, lots of chocolate, and a touch of magic, Karen Sandler has proven that despite how sweet a romance may start out, there has to be something more substantial holding it together than chocolate. Mark and Kat were a perfectly matched couple who had to find out that even people in love can argue, disagree, and get angry, as long as the love between them proves to be stronger than anything else. Chocolate Magic is a page-turner that will have you riveted to your seat in anticipation of the happy ending.
