Naomi is an orphan taken in by the Holy Order of St. John. She has been cared for by Brother Gabriel and taught reading, writing and different languages. She excels at sketching and enjoys a quiet and peaceful life in the Order.

Gideon is a “brother” of sorts to Gabriel. They are both angels but Gideon is a rebel. His hatred of humans puts him at odds with Michael the Archangel and his brethren. He can either give up his rebellion or be cast out with Lucifer and the demons.

I was captivated by Cyndi Friberg's Born of the Shadows. Naomi and Gideon are wonderful characters and Ms. Friberg writes them so that as we follow along with their story, we become involved with them, we come to care for them and their well-being. Naomi, although restricted by the culture and mores of the time, is a strong and talented woman. She feels strongly for Gideon despite his nature. Gideon is struggling with himself as a result of the punishment meted out by Michael. He tries to fight his feelings for Naomi but realizes he cannot.

While I loved Ms. Friberg's characters, I didn't feel the pacing was what it should have been. The story's second act was very long and not much seemed to happen. It was not until the end of the second act that the story regained the momentum it had at the beginning. The final act turns out to be very exciting and it left me thirsty for more of Ms. Friberg's Rebel Angels series.

I recommend Born of the Shadows and the Rebel Angels series to anyone who is interested in angels, demons or vampires. You will not be disappointed.
