Michelle Pillow Interview

Good afternoon Ms. Pillow. Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. I'd like to start by asking you about yourself.

How did you and your husband meet?
We both worked at the same bar. I was the head waitress trying to pay my way through college, he was the DJ. Through mutual friends, I discovered he needed a roommate and I needed a place to live. The rest is best saved for a romance novel. lol

What is your definition of a good day?
Not running out of coffee or creamer, wearing pj pants from sun up to sun down and being with my family.

Now, you mention monkey toes on your website, being a monkey toes person myself, I understand, can you explain to the 'others' out there what we're talking about?
Monkey toes is what we call it in my family because we can pick things up with our feet. Instead of bending over, we take an object—like a pen—and lift it with our toes like a monkey.

What is it about pajama pants? How many do you actually own? Which is your favorite place to get them?
Come on, they’re pajama pants. What is not to love? If you don’t get it, you never will. Lol. Some things just can’t be explained. J Now, when you say own, do you mean with or without holes? Lol. I think I have 10 pairs, maybe more now. My fave place? The discount rack. I love a good deal.

How do you write? Do you schedule writing time? Do you use a computer or pen and paper? Do you write by the seat of your pants or plot?
I write whenever I can fit it in, thought night time seems to flow better for me. Everyone always says—plot and plan. I don’t. I’m one of those people who had an idea pop in my head in the middle of the night and I just have to write it down or I can’t sleep. I don’t know how many ‘helpful, how to write’ books I’ve read that says this doesn’t happen. Well, lol, it does to me. I use a computer. I hate trying to read my own writing. Plot is definitely by the seat of my pants. I just give the characters a world and they take it from there. Many times, they never listen to me and do whatever they want to anyway.

Are you able to write full time? If so, how long have you been writing as a full time job?
Since I own a business, I can pretty much write full time. I’d say that I’ve been seriously doing it for over a year and it does pay the bills. Though, it is nice to have my business to fall back on.

How did you find out you were going to be published? Email, letter, phone call? How did you celebrate?
Letter. I was too stunned to celebrate. The first step was telling everyone that I was writing books. LOL, I think only 3 people in the world knew at that point.

How did you chose paranormal romance as your niche?
I would actually say that paranormal romance sort of just chose me. lol

I actually started writing historical romances. I love all things history and went to college with the intention of getting a history degree. However, life took some very cool turns and I ended up doing other things. My first book to be published just happened to be a paranormal. I always wrote stories. Mists of Midnight, my first book, was actually my ninth book written. Many haven’t even seen a publisher’s desk. I might get back to them someday. After that, the paranormal thing just kind of happened for me. I love doing it and don’t know if I would go back to doing historicals. One of the older stories, Maiden and the Monster was picked up by EC and comes out Jan 06. It’s a full length plus historical. Vladamir is a political prisoner of King Alfred to insure peace between the Saxons and Vikings. While a prisoner, he is given land (for often nobles were held prisoner not by bars, but their honor). Eden, the daughter of his hated enemy and the man he holds responsible for his scars, is left before his castle gate for dead. He has to discover the mystery of how she got there, while using her to extract his revenge. Only problem, he never counted on feeling anything for her.

Can you tell us about your current releases? Do you have anything new coming out soon? Can you give us a sneak peek?
I’m very excited about my first full length erotic chick lit (CHEEK imprint) coming out with Virgin Publishing, Fierce Competition. Though, I do have to say it’s not like typical chick lit. It releases Aug 05 in the UK and Sept 05 in the US. Jane takes a job ‘beneath her’ to pay for a shopping spree she shouldn’t have went on, only to found out by her social rival, who then tries to ruin her life—starting with breaking up her relationship with the senator’s son. Then, right after that, I have Opposites Attract (CHEEK, Virgin Publishing) releasing Dec05/Jan06. It’s a cross-country adventure featuring an impoverished socialite and a tattoo artist who can’t seem to get along.

Ellora’s Cave, I have Scorched Destiny—a very hot erotic that’s already getting rave reviews. It has to do with genies (just released). And Taming Him, an even sexier alien abduction story.

From New Concepts Publishing, the Lords of the Var series is wrapping up. It’s the second of my futuristic series, spinning off of the popular Dragon Lords. I’m constantly amazed by how well these are loved by readers and get many emails asking about the series. I’ve go plenty of adventures for these guys and others planned and many books in the works. Dragon Lords 1 and 2 are in print (The Barbarian Prince, The Perfect Prince) and Lords of the Var 4: The Rogue Prince will release very soon in ebook.
