Nita Wick Interview
I am delighted to be speaking with Nita Wick today. Thanks for chatting with us today Nita and welcome to FAR!
To you, what makes a great romance hero?
For me, a really good romance hero is strong, intelligent and maybe just a little bit stubborn. I love it when a heroine can make the hero admit he was wrong.
In your opinion, what are the three most essential ingredients of an excellent romance novel?
I would have to say good characterization, original plot with a strong climax, and, of course, a happily-ever-after ending. Well-developed characters with good dialog are a must. And these characters must have their own story, so the plot needs be unique. And it just wouldn’t be a romance novel without the happily-ever-after ending.
Could you tell readers a little bit about your current release, How Faerie Dust is Made?
How Faerie Dust is Made is season one of my online serial, The Roscommon Faerie Tales. The series is an historical fantasy set in Roscommon, Ireland in about the year 400 A.D. Though they live in the faerie realm, the faeries frequent the forests of Roscommon and often meet up with humans. The humans of the area distrust the faeries and their magic. The faeries don’t care much for the humans either, so they are often at odds. In How Faerie Dust is Made, Conall dislikes faeries as much or more than most humans, but he meets Aisling in the forest and is tempted to make an exception. Aisling realizes that Conall is her life mate. After all, faeries know these things. Aisling must win Conall’s trust if she wants her happily-ever-after ending. But she has secrets that may turn Conall against her forever.
Almost every author at some point or another suffers from writer's block. Have you ever had that problem? How do you deal with it?
I’m still very new to writing, but already I’ve gotten stuck a time or two. At first, I just waited until I had the creative flow going again. Sometimes that took months. So now, when I’m having trouble with a certain chapter or scene, I just skip it and write the one that is more easily put into words. Usually what happens is the scene that I skipped will suddenly become clear because now I know what has to happen in order to build up to the next section. So now I don’t get writer’s block, I get writer’s detour.
How did you celebrate selling your first book?
After I quit jumping up and down and squealing, my family and I went out to eat. I know that doesn’t sound like a big deal, but we don’t do that much. Oh, sure, I pick up KFC or a pizza on the way home from work often enough, but we seldom go out to a nice restaurant. So that was a special night out.
What satisfies you about your writing?
What I like most about writing is the satisfaction of making the story end the way I want it to. I read books or see movies all the time that I think, “That’s not the way it should have ended.” Well, my stories end the way they are supposed to. LOL At least they end the way I think they are supposed to.
I see from your website that your working on a historical novel tilted A Real Husband. Can you tell us more about this story and when readers can expect to see it?
A Real Husband was the very first novel I wrote. I am working on a few minor changes and adding a little polish. I’m hoping to submit it to a publisher very soon. Angelina was married as a child to the son of her ailing father’s friend in order to protect her and her inheritance. More than eight years later, Darien, her libertine husband, has yet to make an appearance to claim his bride. She has reached the end of her patience and now she wants A Real Husband. But when she requests an annulment, Darien decides maybe he wants be a real husband. Angelina is strong heroine. In fact, she may have to do a little sleuthing and battle the unknown villain herself if she wants to save Darien. It’s a tale that proves it’s not always the damsel who is in distress.
I've been seeing a number of discussions on the Yahoo groups about Happily-Ever-After. Do you feel that HEA is necessary to a romance novel?
Absolutely! As I said before, I think a good romance must have a happily-ever-after ending. I suppose that’s why I prefer historicals. You don’t always have a HEA in a contemporary. I want the heroine to meet her perfect hero. Of course, it’s much more interesting when they have to work through a few obstacles, but good must always overcome evil and love must conquer all. LOL That’s what a romance novel is all about. Take out the HEA and you are left with chick lit.
What can your fans look forward to in the next twelve months from you?
Seasons two and three of The Roscommon Faerie Tales are already in the works and have release dates. Hopefully, by the end of the year, A Real Husband will have found a home, too. I have four other projects I would like to begin work on and my critique partner and I have plans to write a book together.
Everyone has a different perspective on "getting away from it all" and a good book often helps to satisfy an escapist urge. As a reader or an author, what are the essential elements for you in good escapist reading?
I read for just that reason – a temporary escape from the stress of the real world. When I read, I want a story that is completely different than everyday life. I don’t want to read about some woman who is trying to balance a job and a family. I know all about that life. I want a whole different world. I like historicals, time travel, and fantasy romance best because they take you to a completely different environment, either the world of yesterday or some imaginary world. I want the author to “take me there.” I want to feel as if I have traveled in a time machine, or slipped through a wormhole in space, or maybe even squeezed through the little white rabbit’s door to Wonderland. Calgon, er, I mean Teresa Medeiros or Victoria Alexander, take me away!
Is there anything else you would like to share with your readers?
I would just like to ask that readers stop over and check out the new serials at Inara Press. The Seron Serials are designed to be like your favorite TV show, like Desperate Housewives, or Buffy The Vampire Slayer, or Ghost Whisperer, but they are for readers. My serial is a light, sweet romance with faeries and magic. But if that’s not your thing, there are several other series. There are historicals and contemporaries, sci-fi and fantasy, mystery and suspense. We have ghosts and vampires, Druids and mages, and even a guy who can raise the dead. There is something for everyone. www.inarapress.com
