Jacquelyn Frank Interview

Fallen Angel Reviews would like to welcome the fantastic author of Jacob, Ms. Jacquelyn Frank. Thanks so much for joining us.
I am utterly thrilled to be here, thank you!

Can you start out by giving us a glimpse into the world of the Nightwalkers?
The Nightwalkers, the Dark Cultures, are the supernatural races of the night that live on the fringe of human society. Some are familiar to us, like Vampires and Lycanthropes, and others are much more mysterious like the Demons, Mistrals and Shadowdwellers. These races thrive under the light of the moon and are often dangerously affected by the sun. These unique cultures have their own rules, their own laws and their own cultural norms, mores and traditions. For the most part they want no part of humans or human contact. But there’s no way to control those pesky humans and they often find clashes with them to be very disruptive to their lives.

Having read and enjoyed Jacob, I have got to ask you; what was the inspiration for such a unique and intricate book?
A dream, mostly. I dreamed the opening sequence where Jacob is leaping from light pole to light pole, from his perspective. The rest of writing the novel was an act of following the ideal of those moments. To leap in ways unexpected and as unique as I could.

Jacob and Isabella were a fabulous match, can you tell us if you had a physical or emotional model for either of them?
Personality-wise, Bella is a lot like me…only she’s much more brassy and ballsy when facing down contentious people. I tend to internalize that or just bitch to my girlfriends in a vent. But I am very no-nonsense, cut to the chase, impatient to solve the problem…and convinced that there isn’t a problem on earth that can’t be solved if only people showed a little more determination. I despise my own apathy about certain things and how defeatist I feel at time, and Bella I guess is my way of taking charge and fixing what needs to be fixed in my world. The power of one person and its effect…but if you think about it, Bella had no power without Jacob and Jacob had no impetus without Bella.

Do you feel as if you are a plot-driven author or character-driven?
Character driven first. Which often paints me into corners with plot issues. Then I have to literally repaint the whole room just to get out of it.

Gideon's story is coming out soon, please oh please, can we have a peek?
Umm…sure! Heh. All you have to do is look at the back of Jacob. There’s a peek there. Oh…okay, I have a small tease:
“Legna,” Gideon said quietly, his voice deep and even, weighed with an eerie seriousness that made her become very still. “My primary concern is, and always has been, for the health of those I serve. No matter who they are, no matter what it takes for me to reach my goal of a cure.” He placed a fingertip beneath her chin and raised it to make certain their gazes locked. “If it takes a clear promise that I will respect your confidentiality, no matter what, then you have it. Nothing you tell me will go beyond us.”

“Not even to Noah?” she challenged.

“Look at me, Legna. Look at me with all of your power and you will see there are no lies or deceptions. I will not discuss you with anyone. Not to Noah, nor Jacob or anyone else. Not without your permission. I swear it to you, Legna, I will not speak of this to anyone else anymore than I spoke of that night between us.” He searched her expression of surprise slowly. “Whatever you think of me,” he continued, “I have never, in all my vast lifetime, broken my word.”

I was intrigued by the hints of possible subplots in Jacob. Can you give us an idea of where your universe will take us next?
Oh you know, the usual. Adventure, excitement, danger, contention, lust, sex, love, devotion, devastation, jealousy, betrayal, revenge, resolutions, more questions, more unexpected answers…one thing I can say is I don’t like to be figured out. The only thing you can figure on for me is not to assume you know where I am going.

Are you an outliner? Or pantser? Do you have main ideas roughed out, or do you let it flow?
At this point in my life I can say I am 90 percent go with the flow and 10 percent outliner. It used to be 100 percent letting the story and characters take me where it will, but with a universe this big and a memory affected by age and medications, I have to keep things laid out in a grid of information or I will totally screw up! Thank goodness for copyeditors too. Mine is great at remembering the little details and double-checking my facts and mythology.

Have you had any characters not behave for you? Have they taken charge of the story and held you hostage?
More like…the other way around but they come kicking and screaming the whole way. At most it’s like channeling a spirit. The character overtakes me…their voice, attitude, personality, way of thinking…and I find myself acting and reacting as they would in the story. I think it makes for more authenticity in development.

Other than Gideon, what do you have coming up next?
Elijah comes after Gideon. And then comes…well, I can’t say what comes next just yet because it won’t make any sense at this point. But trust me, I am working on something hot and I won’t disappoint anyone and everyone will have their day. I know a lot of people who read Jacob are anticipating the stories of all the men they met like they are drooling over a feast. I will give everyone a taste of everything they want and things they don’t even realize yet that they will want. It’s all good.

Do you have an ending for the Nightwalkers series in mind? Or are there an endless amount of stories brewing?
You have to say it’s endless because there are at least a half dozen races in the Nightwalker world. It will allow for me to anything and everything I want…why should I stop when I have such an enormous world to work in?

I have to mention your website, it is amazing! Is it your design, or did you get some help with it? Can you tell us about the vision behind it?
Well the artist who did it, her name is Emily Thing and she owns Little Cabin Graphics who did the website. Her artistic background allowed her to meet minds with me about what I envisioned and wanted this to look like. It was AMAZING how perfectly she got it. It’s like she snatched it right out of my head. Either she is a total genius or I am easy to please. Ha! She deserves every penny I pay her for it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Yeah, actually. This has been a really difficult and stressful year for me already. Becoming published, watching the lists and critics, surgery, familial changes, raising a kid, buying a house and planning a relocation…I have to say that the fans of Jacob and those who frequent my website’s forums have made it all so much easier and so much more fun. They are wonderful humans who help me keep it all grounded and in perspective. Some are old friends, some are very new, but all are quite extraordinary. Also, I need to send big hugs to the authors who have befriended me so readily these past months. I am convinced that they are some of the best women I’ve ever known! Thanks everyone! Don’t be strangers And if anyone wants to know the real scoop on who I am and all my human details, I’m there all the time and you can talk to me for yourself and find out.

Thanks so much for chatting with us. I enjoyed our time and can only hope you'll come back again. If you'd like to see more about Ms. Frank and her books, you can visit her website.
