Kimberly Nee Interview

I am delighted to be speaking with Kimberly Nee today. Thanks for chatting with us today Kimberly and welcome to FAR!
Thank you. I'm thrilled to be here :)

To start, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I live in New Jersey, where I'm a full-time mom to my two kids. I somehow manage to squeeze in time to write between naps, school, and other activities. I love to read almost as much as I love to write, but my to be read pile is reaching a dangerous height - I just don't have the time I used to! :) I've been writing for as long as I can remember, and Johanna Lindsey's Tender Rebel is the first historical romance I'd ever read. She's the reason why I write historicals! :)

You sold your first book in 2004, has being published changed your life at all?
For the first time, I have actual deadlines, instead of self-imposed ones. But the only real change is when a reader sends me an e-mail telling me they liked Book A and want to know when Book B, etc, is coming out. It's still a real nice surprise!

Shelter From the Storm is now available from Wings ePress, Can you tell us more about it?
Kendra St. James is a very proper English lady - the only daughter of a earl. She spends a great deal of time and energy bailing her brother Quinton out of one mess after another. When he gambles away their father's watch, she must retrieve it from American privateer Captain Derek Ashton. While at the docks, all hell breaks loose, with Kendra and Quinton accidentally being kidnapped by Ashton in the process. If that wasn't enough, Ashton's ship is later sunk, leaving Kendra and Ashton stranded on the New Jersey coast. As they work their way to Philadelphia (where Ashton calls home), not only do they have to deal with their situation, but also with the growing attraction they feel for each other.

What’s one thing you would like your readers to know about you?
Wow - that's tough... I guess it would have to be that I like when they take the time to send me an email saying they've enjoyed one of my books. It means a lot that someone's taken time out of their day just to write me. :)

How much time do you spend doing research for a story?
It varies from story to story. I usually do research on the time period in general, write my first draft, and then go back to look up specific things. It's a process I repeat with each draft until the story is done. Then, I do a once-over, checking my notes as I go. I really don't know how long it takes, all told, though. LOL

When writing historical romance, what is more important to you as a writer - the character relationships, or providing historical accuracy?
I think the most important thing is the character relationships. Without that, there's really no story LOL. I try to be as accurate as possible, but sometimes it isn't possible without running the risk of the book reading like a textbook. I'd rather write an enjoyable love story than a dry history book. .

Is there any other genre you would like to try?
I've been working on a contemporary romance, and trying my hand at erotic romance. One that I haven't tried, but would like to, is probably paranormal. I've always loved ghost stories, so why not write one?

Your book, Promise Me Forever is currently available from Wings ePress. Can you tell us more about it?
When the death of Heather Spencer's father leaves her mired in debt, she manages to pay off all but one - owed to the madam of London's most notorious brothel. In exchange for forgiving the debt, the madam expects Heather to work for her as a courtesan. But Heather never dreamed that American Drew Kennedy, the first man to walk through her door, would be the man of her dreams.

Could you tell us what your currently working on?
Right now, I'm working on the follow up to Shelter From the Storm. The story focuses on Kendra's eldest brother, Hugh. Though it is expected that he'll marry the daughter of his father's dearest friend, no one ever thought that a free-spirited Scottish girl would be the one to steal his heart.

Is it hard for you to balance your life as a writer? How do you manage it?
I'm lucky in that I don't work outside my home, definitely makes the balancing act a lot easier LOL. I usually write while my daughter's in school and my son's napping, and of course, after everyone goes to bed at night. It only gets stressful when a deadline is looming and I'm running like crazy to get everything done! LOL

If you could be invisible for one hour, what would you do and where would you go?
Oooh... that's a tough one...I would probably just go to the mall and follow people around. I'm kind of an eavesdropper as it is, but to do it without worrying about getting caught would be fun. :) I think it helps an author develop an ear for dialogue, just listening to how everyone around you sounds, how they gesture, what slang they use - it helps to create a three-dimensional character.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us today?
I do have a monthly newsletter, and I also have a blog - which I try to update weekly, if not daily. I love to hear from readers through email or comments on my blog!
