We have the pleasure of being able to chat today with
Hubert L. Mullins. Hubert, welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews.
Thank you! Your website is really something. You guys must stay busy 24/7 with all the updates!
I took a look at your website and I notice that you have a new book out now,
Rage of the Vampire. I believe you have a three-hundred-year old vampiress in your book,
Rage of the Vampire.
That’s right! Dyne is back from the first book, The Vampires of Hope’s Covenant. But her character has drastically changed from the previous novel. I think readers will be quite surprised.
Why not tell the readers a little something about the story?
Sure! Rage of the Vampire picks up where The Vampires of Hope’s Covenant left off, although it’s a few years down the road. New characters are introduced, mainly Kersey: one of the first ten vampires who is a thousand years old! Old characters are back as well, Dyne and Lorne. The story revolves around Kersey’s desire to stay hidden from Mydian, the god of the Underworld, who has dibs on her soul. He tasks Dyne tracking her down and killing her. Both travel the world of Mystyria in pursuit and evasion.
What is a day like for
Hubert?
My day is pretty packed. I have a full-time job working with animals that keeps me from my desk a lot. I normally get up, try to write a bit, feed my massive iguana Darrin, and then head off to work. I get in pretty late but that’s when my writing schedule normally begins. I do my best work after a long day of work when my mind is tired!
About how many hours a day do you spend writing?
Normally, I would say three to four. Sometimes this can vary; I’ve had days where I’ve written as little as ten to twenty minutes and I’ve gone through a few marathon sessions that lasted ten to twelve hours.
Was there anyone or anything that inspired you to start writing?
I’ve always loved fantasy. When I was younger I would walk a mile into town and buy a ‘Forgotten Realms’ fantasy novel from a tiny comic-book store. I was only able to make this trip once a month, so it was my mission to finish up the previous book before I bought a new one. As an avid reader, it was usually no problem.
What prompted your desire to write a book on vampires?
Most people assume that I’ve read every vampire book, seen every vampire movie, and have been familiarized with every sort of vampire media. This couldn’t be further from the truth. I love vampires, but I love to be creative even more. I saw an angle to approach these mythical creatures that I had not seen done before. We associate vampires as instruments of the devil and weak against the power of God. This is true for our society and our way of writing and filming. What happens if we take these same creatures and put them in a fictional, fantasy world? The rules of the devil/God, strength/weakness no longer applies. I saw this as an opportunity to reinvent vampires; to rebuild them from the ground up. I wanted to make up my own rules, I wanted to give them varied breeds and make them more like actual people than creatures driven by the need to feed.
What can we hope to see from
Hubert in the future?
I’m currently working on the conclusion to this trilogy which is titled ‘War of the Vampire’. Hopefully, it’ll be in readers’ hands by next November. Although this is purely speculation, I ‘may’ end up doing a fourth book, a prequel which will tell of the creation of the first vampires.
Was it hard for you to choose names for your characters?
Not really. A lot of my characters have names based on other words. I also have a stack of baby naming books that help a lot! Sometimes I pick these names based on people around me. My character Hannah was named after a fellow co-worker’s baby’s name.
When you are not sitting behind your desk composing, what other enjoyment do you do?
I’m still usually at the desk! I enjoy computer games, surfing the web, or helping animals.
If you could travel on a vacation for two weeks, where would your journey take you?
This is a hard one! Although Italy and Prague are big on my to-do lists, I would have to say Ireland for a second time. I loved the landscape and it helped to inspire my writing.
Have you ever written a screenplay or considered doing so?
I haven’t yet, but I would really like to. It is a dream of mine for one of my books to be adapted onto the big screen.
What is your favorite month?
I would have to October. The air feels good, the leaves are changing, and it’s just a nice time of year. Also, it’s the month of Halloween and who doesn’t like that?
Hubert, would you like to give the readers your website? Also if you have a myspace?
Sure! I have both, actually. My website is hubertlmullins.com and my myspace is myspace.com/hopescovenant.
Is there anything that you would like to add to our interview?
I would just like to say thank you for the interview and I hope it gives your viewers something worthy of checking out your awesome site!
From a male’s perceptive, how would you describe the perfect mate?
Wow, that’s a curveball! I would just like a girl who is nerdy like me! Someone who enjoys the same things as I, likes to go out but also understands that I need time to write. This is such a hard thing for those who want to get close to a writer to understand. I may as well add that I’m single . . . hint hint!
Hubert, thank you so much for chatting with us today. I have enjoyed the time we spent learning a bit more about
Hubert and his books.
I’ve enjoyed it too! I hope to talk to you again once the new book comes out next year!
