Jolie du Pre Interview

Today I am speaking with Jolie du Pre.

Good Morning Jolie, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to Fallen Angel Reviews today.

Jolie, I love the introduction of your website, it is alluring and has a way of drawing in the reader. Then there is a calm to it as well. You have quite a list of books and soon to be released ones, as well. Smile Like You Mean It was a really engaging read. You certainly can write great stories, Jolie.
Linda, thank you for interviewing me and thanks also for your kind words.

The photo on the cover of my website was a gift from my friend and favorite cover artist Jinger Heaston. The gift was a surprise and I was so excited about it that I became motivated to re-design my website and use the photo for the cover.

The readers would love to hear more about Jolie and her great stories. Is there a particular book that you would like to discuss with us today?
This is my second interview with FAR and things have changed since then. The biggest thing that has happened to me is that Alyson Books accepted my query for a women of color lesbian erotica anthology.

I'm an African American and a writer of lesbian erotica and erotic romance. Putting together a collection of women of color (African American, Asian, Latina, Indian, etc.) lesbian erotica has been a dream of mine for some time.

I put out my call for submissions and I received some excellent stories as a result. The reader will find quality erotica by such authors as Fiona Zedde, CB Potts, Terri Pray, JT Langdon, Sofia Quintero, Michelle Houston and many more.

Iridescence: Sensuous Shades of Lesbian Erotica will be published in May of 2007, but is available for pre-order at Amazon now.

As I was putting this anthology together I envisioned two separate readings. The first reading will be held on August 25th at 7:00 p.m. at Bluestockings in New York, NY with Tawanna Sullivan, CB Potts, Shanel Odum, Sofia Quintero and me. The second reading will be held on September 17th at 7:00 p.m. at A Different Light Bookstore in West Hollywood, CA with Jolene Hui, Andrea Dale, Fiona Zedde and me.

Would you like to tell us about your other works in progress?
Well, I have a lot. My ebooks which run from 3,000 to 15,000 words are with Ocean's Mist Press. "Pet" is coming soon and I've submitted a story called "My Secret Beauty." I'll submit another one in March. My novel, Litria Runs Away, is in progress. Then there are the many print anthologies that I want to submit to, most importantly, Purple Panties, an African American lesbian erotica anthology edited by Zane. In addition, I was invited to be a columnist for a blog run by Gracie of Tit-Elation and Sex-Kitten.Net and her friend Autunm Seave. I will be contributing content every week and I look forward to the challenge.

Do you have a favorite author? Favorite book?
I have many favorites. What author doesn't have many favorites? LOL For Classic literature I'm fond of John Steinbeck. Contemporary - I've been raving about Augusten Burroughs. Erotica - my favorite books are usually the "best" collections, like the Best Lesbian Erotica series and the Best American Erotica series.

Has anyone influenced you in your writing?
Alison Tyler influences me the most when it comes to my erotica. I can identify most with her style of writing.

Do you have hobbies that interest you when you are not writing?
When it's not 10 below zero in Chicago I love to garden. LOL

Are you a member of any author groups - RWA, critique groups, etc.?
I'm a member of a lot of groups. When I need a critique I turn to the Erotica Readers and Writers Association's Storytime. I've become very active in Epic, the Electronically Published Internet Connection. Epic will be having their annual convention soon - Epicon. I'll be a panelist for their first ever GLBT Panel. I'm very excited about it.

What do you think of critique groups in general?
If you can find a good critique group I think their very valuable. My association with ERWA helped me to become a better writer.

How long have you been writing?
I've been writing since 2001.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
I've always written, but I haven't always wanted to be a writer. This came about after I had children. I scaled my work outside the home to part-time and I wanted to do something more meaningful in my life. For the first time in my life I've found a job that I greatly enjoy. I greatly enjoy erotica writing.

When composing, what character drives you more the hero or the heroine?
Well, I'm a writer of lesbian erotica - so the heroine. LOL.

Has there been an easy book for you to write?
If I'm really excited about a story, it just pours out of me. My story "Kiki" in Best Lesbian Erotica 2007 and in Cream: The Best of ERWA was like that.

What about your hardest book to compose?
The one I'm writing now for Zane's anthology. I think because I want to get into the book so bad it's making the process harder.

Do you have a book that has been really great fun to write?
Fay Flowers, the story I sent to Literotica, was fun to write. It's about a 19 year old girl who runs away from home. My novel is a lot of fun. Another young girl, but this time she's a creature of the night, similar to a vampire.

Have you experienced writer's block---> If so, how did you work through it?
I'm experiencing it right now! I've got a bunch of anthologies I want to submit to, but the brain isn't putting the stories out.

Do you have another website other than http://www.joliedupre.com that you would like to share?
Yes, I'm the founder of GLBT Promo, a promotional group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender erotica and erotic romance. I also have three My Space pages -
http://www.myspace.com/joliedupre
http://www.myspace.com/glbtpromo
http://www.myspace.com/ebooksbyjolie

Do you have a favorite food?
Chocolate.

If you could be on a deserted island for a weekend with anyone, who would you take with you?
My hubby! He's my best friend.

Is there anything else that you would like to tell your readers?
Thank you for supporting lesbian erotica!

Jolie, I enjoyed our talk today and wish you continued success in your writing career. Your stories have a way of really reaching out to the reader.
Thanks!
