Donna Grant Interview
Fallen Angel Reviews would like to welcome historical author Donna Grant. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions.
Thanks for having me.
When you sit down to write for the day, do you have a specific plan in mind? Or do you let the Muse guide you as it will?
Sometimes I'll know where my characters need to go, but most of the time, I let my Muse take over and take me where she will. Most always she surprises me and makes the stories that much better.
You mention finding inspiration everywhere. What sparked the idea for your Druid's Glen series? Can you give us a basic idea of the premise for the series?
It was a CD. I was driving and listening to a Loreena McKinnit CD , Book of Secrets, and when the song The Mummer's Dance came on I saw the Druid's Glen and three Druid priestesses. As soon as I got home, I started the first in the series, Highland Mist.
The Druid's Glen sisters is about three sisters who have been gifted by the Fae with special powers to control fire, wind and water so they can battle an ancient evil and win the hearts of their soul mates.
One prophecy to save the world.
Two realms fighting for control.
Three Druid sisters who hold the key to salvation,
And the hearts of the men who would love them.
Which is your favorite character? If not just one, then which is your favorite couple?
Oh, I love all of my characters, but there are some that hold a very special place in my heart. Lugus for one. He'll be in the fourth Druid's Glen book released in a few months. There's also Val from my Shield series and Kieran from my Royal Chronicle series. But the one that gets me the most is Galen from my Knights of Legend series that is yet to be released.
What is there about Scotland that calls to you? Is there any specific thing?
It/s difficult to describe what it is about Scotland that calls to me. Maybe its because its such an ancient land filled with mystery and magic and lore. Whatever it is, it has a very strong hold on me. :) I've teased my husband that once I get there I may not ever return.
Can you tell us about the day that you first heard that you were accepted as an author for New Concepts Publishing?
Ah, one of my favorite days. I had just returned from traveling and was going through my emails as I sat on the couch with my husband. I saw the email from NCP and skipped it, figuring it was another rejection. When I finished reading all the other emails my husband kept telling me to go ahead and read the NCP email. I hesitantly gave in, and when I clicked to open it, I shut my eyes and told my husband to read it real quick for me.
He immediately told me to look for myself. I opened my eyes and saw that they wanted my book. I got so excited I jumped off the couch which caused my laptop to crash to the floor, and I was so happy I didn't care if the computer was broke or not. (it wasn't fortunately).
You currently have three series out, The Druid's Glen, The Sheilds, and The Royal Chronicles. What is it about a series that makes it your choice to write?
There have been times I set out to write a series, like the Druid's Glen, but other times, I just find that the same characters keep appearing, so I make it a series. I personally love to read series. There's something about seeing the characters again and again, discovering what happens not only at the end of each book, but at the end of the series that's very fulfilling.
I've tried to write just one book, but as I'm writing, I start thinking of other ideas of characters in that book that can link them. :)
Are there any characters that you've missed once their story is over? Will you bring them back?
Aimery, the Fae commander, that we see in each of the Druid's Glen books also plays a major role in The Shield series as well as The Royal Chronicle series. Aimery will also be in other series that I'm writing that is a spin off of the fourth Druid's Glen book. I've been flooded with emails from readers wanting Aimery to have his own book. And he will. It will just be awhile. He's got other things to do first. :)
Your current release, A Kind of Magic, is the second book in The Sheilds series, can you tell us about this book and the series?
This series was so very much fun to write. Each of the heroes was so different, yet the same.
Earth is about to be annihilated by creatures spoken of only in myths and legends. The fabeled race of the Fae have gathered together a group of warriors highly skilled and trained to defeat these creatures.
These men come from different times and realms, giving their lives if necessary, to end the destruction of our world. Our fate is in their hands.
How has your life changed now that you are a published author?
For the most part it hasn't really. I still write during the day, I still chat with my friends through email all day long, but instead of thinking of which publisher I'll submit to next, I'm thinking of promotional items, which booksellers to send promo to, what contest to hold next, what to say on my blog the next day, what character to interview next on my blog, what book to write next, what series to propose to my editor next... LOL. It's never ending.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
