Heather Holland Interview
I am delighted to be speaking with Heather Holland today. Thanks for chatting with us today Heather and welcome to FAR!
What’s one thing that readers would never guess about you? I’m extremely, almost to the point of painful, shy. I will talk about nearly anything, but I’m probably blushing beet red at the time.
Can you tell us about your current release The Drigon’s Fall? The Drigon’s Fall was my first “long” book and is my first paperback. It’s about the super sexy spaceship captain, Dawson Lang, and his last mission for the Alliance—what he calls a babysitting job. There has never been a woman aboard the Drigon, until Dr. Meredith Carson joins the crew, much to Dawson’s displeasure. However, he’s instantly attracted to the beautiful doctor and when the ship crashes, makes it his mission to keep her and the remaining crew alive since a monster is stalking them.
You have written books under several pseudonyms. How difficult is it to keep up with each persona? It’s extremely difficult, which is why I’ve decided—with a not so gentle nudge from my husband, friends, editors—to work on converging back down to just the Heather Holland persona. With my health problems, it’s just too much to contend with and is very draining. I’d much rather spend my time figuring out what to write next and writing than worrying about whether or not I’m using the right name. It seemed a really good idea at the time, but the reality of it is, I bow down to the ones who can successfully juggle multiple names. I’m not one of them.
You currently write science fiction, paranormal, and fantasies. Is there any other genre that you would like to try your hand at? I have an idea or two for romantic comedy, though I my sense of humor is somewhat lacking, and I have some ideas for romantic suspense swirling around in my head that I plan to try my hand at, just haven’t gotten a good dose of bravery yet.
Can you tell readers more about your Mystik Guardians series and when we might expect the next book? The Mystik Guardians books are about a plethora of supernatural and paranormal creatures from Nosferatu, Lycans, Mages, and Mystwalkers (shape shifters) to gods and demons. I’ve had the world in my head for years before sitting down to write the first book, Vampire’s Cross. I have a binder full of notes that I’ve made and kept over the years, because it’s a rather sizeable world. I could talk for quite some time about the Mystik world and the characters that fill it. There are currently four books in the series with many, many more in the works. Unfortunately, they are temporarily on hold. I needed a small break to work on some other projects I had going and to work on more Sci-Fis. As soon as information on what is going on with the series and what I plan to do with the name game, I’ll be sure to post all that on my website designed specifically for the series. My health has gotten very bad in the last couple of years and has forced me to take a step back and work out a way to simplify things for myself, but I fully intend to continue the series. There are just too many characters demanding their time in the spotlight to let them go now.
What is the hardest part of creating a book? Surviving the editor? promoting? The last chapter? There are days when just getting the next word out onto the page is the hardest part. I grumble about edits, but they’re really not that bad. Edits give me a last chance to tweak anything that needs it, and to make sure it’s as clear as it can be—it’s easy to forget not everyone can see the images in my head and I leave little yet important details out. However, finishing is always the hardest part. I have many, many, many unfinished projects on my hard drive.
If you could step into any book and take the place of the heroine, who would it be and why? Alexis Chantal from Vampire’s Cross because she’s everything that I’m not. She’s brave, adventurous, and witty. She doesn’t take anything from anyone. I really wish I could be like that at times, but at least I can live the life I dream through my characters.
Could you tell us readers a little bit about your works in progress? At the moment, I’m working on a Sci-Fi about a shape shifting bounty hunter, her android, and the man she gets paired up with. It started out as a short and is turning into quite a thrilling ride—even if it’s longer than I originally planned. I’m also working on a short reincarnation type story and I’ve been fighting with Kaz from Drigon’s Fall to get his story written for quite some time now. The man is extremely stubborn and doesn’t want to cooperate. Let’s see, I’m also working on a Halloween themed short, and… I could probably go on for quite some time about my WIP list…it’s rather sizeable and I tend to work on anywhere from two to six books at one time.
You have 3 wishes, what are they? A self-cleaning house, an unlimited supply of video games, and more time with my wonderful husband.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us? My next release is slated for June and will be out with Twilight Fantasies Publications. It’s a short Sci-Fi saga titled Heads or Tayles 1: Consequences Rendered and is the first of a three part series, which I suppose would make it a trilogy. It’s my first male/male romance and I found it rather challenging but also very fun to write. I also have This Side of Desperate contracted with Ellora’s Cave. It’s a quickie about journalist Stone Blackthorn and his attempts to find the story that will make his career, however Marissa McRae has other plans—like climbing out a church window on her wedding day and straight into Stone’s arms. It’s my first werewolf story—and non-Mystik. Both of those will be available as Heather Holland.
Thank you for taking time to speak with me today Heather. Readers be sure to check out Heather’s website.
