Chandra Knight Interview
We're getting to chat today with Chandra Knight author of Dreamspell: Book 1 Of The Witch Chronicles from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid.
Hi, Ms. Knight, first let me say welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews and thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us.
I’m happy to be here, thanks Donna!
How did you come up with The Witch Chronicles?
The Witch Chronicles was just one of those ideas that pops into your head, right before you fall asleep at night. (At least, that happens to me all the time!) I love reading paranormal stories, and I’m also into the paranormal and the ‘occult’ in my private life.
How many books can we look forward to in The Witch Chronicles?
There will be a total of three novellas in The Witch Chronicles series. Book 1, Dreamspell, was released in February 2006. Book 2, Firespell will be released in January 2008, and Book 3, Lovespell, comes out in May 2008. I had some personal things to deal with for a year or so, which forced a delay between the first and second book.
What is it about the paranormal that draws you to write about it?
I’ve had a great interest in the paranormal since my early teens, and have always been drawn to it, (like a lot of teens, I think!) I was always borrowing books from the library on reincarnation, Edgar Cayce, the afterlife, things like that.
How do you juggle both family and writing?
My kids are grown and gone from home, but my husband is retired now and home all the time. Fortunately, he’s pretty good at entertaining himself, and he even does most of the cooking now (yay!) while I work (editing) and write. But when family comes home, everything else gets put on the back burner while they’re here! I’m also a night owl, so after my husband goes to bed, I burn the midnight oil, and then some. You can usually find me writing late at night, with all the lights off, except for a dim one in my office….ah…quiet.
You're told you can go into the past to meet just one person, who would it be and why?
Anne Boleyn. I’ve always wondered what was so awful that she had to lose her head. I’d love to talk to her and get the real story!
I found reading about you interesting. Could you tell our readers more about yourself?
Thanks Donna! No-one’s ever said that to me before! {grin}
I’ve been married to the same man for 32 years, have a son and a daughter, both grown-up, and a dog who thinks he’s a person. I live in Northern Ontario, Canada and I think I’m pretty ordinary as people go. I was rather conservative growing up, but in my adult years, I began to question everything! About life, about ‘rules’, the establishment etc. I guess I was a delayed hippie, because I was just a little too young in the ‘60’s to take part. (dating myself here! lol) Now I’m a pagan and Wiccan, because it’s what fits me best, a tree-hugger, studying to be a Priestess within the FOI…and my future son-in-law gets the biggest kick out of the fact that I write erotic romance. He can’t believe that that sort of ‘stuff’ doesn’t embarrass me! hehe
What one thing about you do you think your readers would find quirky?
Good question! I don’t consider myself quirky, at all. But maybe I should go ask my husband that one, and see what he has to say? *g*
Does your family read your books? If not, why?
Some of my family have read my regular romances, but none of them have read my erotic romances! Not sure why…I’ll have to ask them about that!
Please tell us about Firespell Book2 Of The Witch Chronicles?
Firespell is the second book in the series, and basically a continuation of the story begun in Dreamspell. But each book stands on its own, as well. Firespell tells the story of two characters whom we first meet in Dreamspell; Derek, a man wracked with guilt, and Allegra, a woman with a secret too dark to reveal…can love save them both?
Do you think your background in being Wiccan has helped in your research for your books?
Greatly! I’ve been Wiccan for about 5 years, and as I mentioned, I’ve always tended to lean toward the unusual in things like that. I’ve drawn on what I’ve learned over the last 5 years to create my characters in The Witch Chronicles, and give them some of the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired.
If you could no longer write, what profession would you go into? Why that one?
I’d be a dancer! I’ve always wanted to be a dancer. I think I must have been one in a past life. Actually, my patron Goddess is Hathor, and I learned recently that the Priestesses of Hathor were the ancient equivelent of erotic dancers. Although, the profession had much more cachet and was respected in those days!
When you’re writing, do you have a specific routine you go through?
Just a tiny little one. I can’t write at my desk, because it’s where I edit etc., so I have to get away from it and boot up my laptop. It’s part of ‘shifting gears’ for me and I write there. Before I do, I always sit quietly, do a bit of deep breathing and think about my characters and what I last wrote. I need to pull myself out of the reality of my workday, and put myself back into my story.
Your website is very easy for readers to navigate. Do you have other sites they'd be able to read more about you and your books?
Thanks Donna! Yes, I do. Readers can also find me at
MySpace,
Book Place,
And they can also visit me at The Romance Galleria in 3D!
Just download their free software, come inside, and visit me in my alcove. {grin}
I know a lot of authors have contests to bring new readers to their work. Are there any in the future from you?
I’m always working on something new! Right now, I’m planning my next newsletter, and I’ll be running one through there. If anyone would like to receive my newsletter regularly, just email me at and ask to be added to my list.
The readers and I both would love to hear about your upcoming books. Could you tell us what you're working on now?
I’m just finishing off Firespell. (Did I mention I write best under pressure?) Then I plan to complete Lovespell immediately afterward. Because I have an affinity for all things Ancient Egyptian, I’m planning to use that as the background for my next story. It remains to be seen whether or not it’ll be a series. It depends how many characters stand up and demand to have their story told!
How did you come up with Mena's and Kieran's names and their characteristics?
Mena’s full name, Philomena popped into my head (in that midnight state of almost-sleep I mentioned earlier!) along with her voice, telling me about herself. And I knew her hero had to be of Celtic Irish descent (as is Mena), so I went on a search for the perfect name for him. As a big Most Haunted fan, I’ve always liked the name of their skeptic, Cieran, so I changed the spelling and adopted the name. Their individual personality traits come to me as I write.
I loved the trailer for Dreamspell. How did you come up with the idea for it?
Thanks Donna. I’d never done a trailer before. This was my first!
Because the three stories revolve around Wicca, Celtic influences and Irish backgrounds, I used several pictures that I took when I was in Ireland in May 2006. Nothing gives you the feel of the mystical more than Ireland! Then I played around with Windows Movie Maker to get the effects I wanted. I wanted to use music appropriate to the feel of my story, and I had a CD (called Isis Invoked) with the perfect piece, Earth, by Jessica Gill. I emailed the artist and asked permission to use the piece. She was quite lovely, and agreed. And that was basically the process. I was tickled with the results!
I would like to thank you again for taking the time to sit down and chat with us here at Fallen Angel Reviews. I'm looking forward to reading more of the Witch Chronicles and others from you.
It was great to chat with you, Donna!
