Phyllis Campbell Interview
Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Phyllis Campbell. Hello Phyllis and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews.
I have noticed that your latest, Pretend I'm Yours and Queen of Hearts has garnished some great reviews. Would you care to tell the readers a bit about these two latest releases?
Hello Linda. I would love to talk about my new releases! Pretend I'm Yours is my first Colonial…but it won't be my last. It was easy to fall in love with my characters while writing this story. Their passion tugs at your heart and leaves you breathless for more!
Lies brought Mercedes Maxwell a breath away from her heart's true desire. Could they keep her from happiness?
A Woman on a Mission
On the precipice of the American Revolution, Englishwoman Mercedes Maxwell is forced by her identical twin's medical circumstances to America. Mercedes will not rest until her brother-in-law accepts his financial responsibility-even if it means impersonating her own sister.
A Man With a Secret
William Braxton's selfish wife could end his life with one word regarding his actions against Mother England. But William and Mercedes discover each may have been mistaken about the other. William is discovering this Katherine is nothing like his bride, and instead everything he'd hoped for.
Queen Of Hearts is another story I loved writing. My hero has a dedication to something, and sticks to it until it's accomplished…and in the meantime, he's falling in love with the heroine. I've had many readers tell me they couldn't help but fall in love with James.
Can a woman battle through secrets to win the love of the man who just might take away her home?
Dr. Cecilia Ashby is forced to disguise herself as a man in order to practice medicine in a small southern town after the Civil War. When she stumbles across an injured gambler in an alley one night, will her ruse get the better of them both? Especially when she finds herself attracted to him.
Gambler, James Lawrence has played his last hand and finally has enough cash to buy back his family plantation the carpetbaggers had taken from him…until he's blindsided, robbed and left for dead. After an interesting stay with the town doctor, he finds his stolen earnings in the hands of the young thief and his sister, Cecilia Ashby, who now reside in his plantation.
James and Cecilia both want the plantation, but do they want a long lasting love even more? Battling deceit, betrayal, and disguises, the two must confront their biggest challenge yet - themselves.
Both of my books are at www.fictionwise.com and at www.amazon.com
Phyllis, you have quite a number of books released. You must have so many WIP's going on in your mind. Is there any particular one that stands out more than the other?
Oh, you don't know the half of it, Linda. Hahaha I always have characters in my mind, screaming at me to write their stories. Some are louder than others, and I have to write their story first. Currently, I have 42 unpublished stories. Of course, most of them need a LOT of work, so I won't be a Nora Roberts success within a year. Maybe in five...
One of my favorite heroes (out of all my stories) has been Edmund Knight. He was first published in my book, My Knight, My Rogue, three years ago. But my contract ran out, so I went looking for another company who might want to contract this story. I rewrote the first part of the story and tightened it up quite a bit and renamed it to, Her Knight Of Seduction. I'm very happy to announce I found a home for it with The Wild Rose Press!!!
As for stories that stand out in my mind...I don't know if I have any. I love all the stories I write, each for different reasons. I'm anxious to start on some of my WIPs that have been waiting a while, though. I have three of them I've been working on this past year. One is my Harlequin Blaze wanna be, Breaking All The Rules. Next is my historical, Spanish Eyes (and yes, my hero looks like Antonio Banderas. And third is my historical paranormal, Night Music. Spanish Eyes is the closest one finished, so it'll be looking for a home soon. BUT...Spanish Eyes is the story two agents have requested a partial from, so hopefully something good will come out of that.
Do you get along well with your publishers?
I would hope so! Hahaha Champagne was my first publisher, and Ellen (the owner) and I get along great. Vintage Publishing brought me on next, and Dawn (owner) and I seem to hit it off well. In fact, she was also my editor for Queen Of Hearts, and I admire her. Leanne with Highland Press is a great woman, too. I think I'm still on their good list...
What do you have planned for future releases?
I'm hoping for a December release with Champagne Books for my last "Fielding Brothers" story, Love Comes Blindly. Right now my characters aren't talking to me, so let's hope they start talking in the next couple of months, or I'm in big trouble. Currently, I have two stories with The Wild Rose Press that are being considered for publication. That'll be great if I can get a contract with them, too. I'll be pitching two stories at the RWA National Conference in Dallas, Texas (in July), one with a Harlequin Blaze editor, and the other with an agent, so let's hope I can interest one or both with my stories.
When you are deciding your genre, do your characters decide for you?
Usually I know before I start writing what genre it's going to be. But there is one story - Night Music - that went from historical, to contemporary, then to historical paranormal. It wasn't that my characters didn't know what they wanted, it was the author who didn't know. But once I changed it to historical paranormal, I knew this would work. My characters were very happy, too.
What prompted you to seek Internet publishing? Do you see it advancing further in the upcoming years?
I had been trying the big NY publishers for a few years and feeling hopeless because of the outcome. I heard about Internet publishing, and so I thought I'd give it a try. I was given a contract to the first place I submitted. Although I still tried to find a publisher that would print my stories and make them available at the bookstores, the Internet opened my eyes to a whole new world of readers. I have enjoyed the people I've met, and I now when I look for a publishing company, I make sure they have ebooks, too.
Do you have any disappointing moments in being an author?
Only when I get rejected. My reviews have been fabulous, and I've been very pleased with them all. Thank goodness for my fans who cheer me up when I'm feeling down. I don't know what I'd do without them.
Do you find it hard with any promotions in your books?
With my first couple of books, it wasn't hard at all. But now I have eight books to promote, and that's a handful!
There is a lot of talk about the value of obtaining "reviews" of your work. How do you feel about having your own books reviewed and what value, if any, do you get from them?
I always look forward to my reviews. Like I mentioned previously, I have been very pleased with the reviews all my books have been getting. All my great reviews go up on my website...and believe it or not, some I print out and have pinned to my wall to help remind me why I'm writing.
Is there anything that you would change about your writing?
I'm always striving to learn something new. I don't ever want to be that author who thinks I know everything and who won't allow room to learn. So when you ask what I would change, I would change my writing, hopefully with each book, for the better.
Is there any habit that you have, you know you will probably never change?
Yes, I do have a habit in my writing. I LOVE to tease!!! I know several reviewers who tell me this, and even my fans comment on it. That is something I will never change. I love the thrill!
Do you miss your characters when you are finished with their tale? Any that you wish you could write about again?
Oh definitely! That's why I wrote the "Fielding Brothers" series. LOL There are five books to that series (two are out of print now), and I'm still thinking to write the sixth story. I'm nuts, I know... But sometimes I just don't want to let go of my characters.
What is your most favorite city in the United States you could visit over and over again and never grow tired of it?
Well...I'm quite the boring person, and I've never gone anywhere in my life. My first plane trip was last year when me and my husband flew to Atlanta, Georgia and then rented a car and drove to Columbia, South Carolina and then from there went to Charleston, South Carolina. There was so much to see in Charleston, that two and half days were not enough. While we were there, we took a Civil War tour. But I would like to go back and take a Colonial tour.
Do you have a website other than http://www.phyllismariecampbell.com that you would like to share with your readers? Perhaps a blog or group?
Oh...just a few.
