Brandy Jordan Interview
Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Brandy Jordan. Thanks for being here today Brandy, welcome to FAR!
To start, can you tell us a little bit about your first release Mistaken? Mistaken is a romantic suspense set in the Mediterranean. Dimitri Marshan is bound by a contract his grandparents entered into which states if he doesn't marry Justine Giacomo, their vineyards will revert to a neutral Tuscan family. He needs the money from the winery to help pay for his Godson's cancer treatment. And he has to protect those who work for him.
However, his fiancée has run away. So he has her followed and kidnapped, only to discover it's not her, but Gabrielle Nobel. Gaby is anxious to return to London to get on with her career and life. She's getting over the betrayal of her ex-boyfriend and wants to focus on her blossoming career in advertising. However, she'd attacked and wakes up in a strange bedroom with a gorgeous guy thinking she's his fiancée. She has to prove she's not this man's bride-to-be and get home before she loses her job. Simple solution, right? Not so when masked men show up at the airport before she boards Dimitri's private plane and open fire at them. Now the two have to figure out who is trying to kill them, find out where Dimitri's fiancée Justine has gone and straighten everything out before Dimitri loses his land and money.
What was the hardest aspect of writing Mistaken? How did you overcome it? Keeping my wild imagination under control. I would be writing Dimitri and Gaby's story and then another story title or idea would pop into my head and start to lead me in a totally different direction.
My solution - I kept another word file open to toggle over to when another story idea came to mind then resume where I'd left off in Mistaken.
Were any of your characters drawn from reality? Not directly. As I write, there are all sorts of people who come to mind, but usually it's a combination of several that gel together to create a character. These include movie stars, musicians, tv show actors, friends, family, former high school boyfriends, etc.
How did you celebrate selling Mistaken to Wild Rose Press? I popped open the bubbly, went for a ride in my limo and had Sven give me a massage.... oh - you're looking for the truth, right? :>
It took me a few days to come to grips with reality. I went through a plethora of emotions - disbelief, excitement, fear, disappointment, etc. It wasn't until my critique partners and friends took me out for lunch that I really let myself enjoy the fact I'd sold! I know - not as exciting as the limo and Sven, but hey, I'm reserving that for a future date :>
How long did it take you to write? I started writing Mistaken a few years ago, then stopped when another idea took root and wouldn't let me go until I'd finished it. (That project is deep within the files, never to be revealed in it's current form). Then about a two years ago, I found Mistaken (previously tited Mistaken Captive) and decided to enter it in my chapter's contest just for grins. My scores were the best ever in the contest circuit. Talk about encouragement. My cps read it and said "this is the one". So I hunkered down, and three months later had the entire thing done.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned while creating MistakenThat I could actually write a suspense. I mean, I love reading them, but never thought I could put my characters through hard times. I've learned to be mean to my characters because only I can bring them around to a happily ever after.
What would you consider your most interesting quirk? Quirk? What Quirk? You think I've got a quirk? I ain't got no stinkin' quirks.... :> hee hee! Seriously, I think I'm a control freak with just enough OCD to be my own worst problem.
I tend to plan, analyze and rework ideas, problems, goals, etc to the point that I have not only a path, but fifty or so other routes to take if I hit traffic along the way. I think it all comes down to controlling things which normally have no control. If I can think of worst case scenarios and figure out a way to make the things I want work, then I'm okay. I'm prepared. Or so I tell myself....
If you could pick any celebrity to be on the cover of your book, who would it be and why? I LOVE the cover guy on Mistaken. He's almost exactly what I envisioned while writing him. But if George Clooney was available.... or if Matthew McConaghey would've dyed his hair.... and returned my calls.... why? because they are so Yummy!
Congratulations! You just won a year off from work to travel anywhere in the world and write the story of your dreams. Where do you go, what type of book do you write, and what’s the title? Paris - with occasional weekend hops over to London. I love those cities - the history, the energy, the sites, the people. I would write a romantic suspense time travel. Royalty would be a part of it as well as Duran Duran - I don't know how, but I'd find a way to have them in it - :> Title? Hmmmm.... The roots of tomorrow? Journey to the past? Modern Princess for yesterday's prince. Hard to come up with titles until the book is half way written.
Could you tell us what your currently working on? A romantic suspense for my WRP option book featuring Gaby's friend Tina (very minor role in Mistaken will now be the star). Also, 2 others that have been requested by agents - it's quite busy in my head these days with all these characters talking.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us today? I coined a phrase a few years ago when I got serious about following my dreams and it's so true. "It takes a dream to set a goal which leads to success."
For anyone thinking they'd like to follow their dreams, this phrase is a good mantra to repeat each day. You can do anything you want! I hope you'll read Mistaken to see the proof of my own dreams coming true!
